Because you always form such informational and educational poetry, I'm awarding this a 6. It's insightful, poignant, and spot on. I work in healthcare. You have a keen understanding of many issues that so plague our world today. Mental health can be so daunting, but so can being a support system for those seeking to receive the balm of understanding and healing. The rhyme, the imagery, the voice/content/verbiage, as a whole are cohesive and poetically dramatic. I found no errors. Thanks for sharing this well penned installment. You seriously need to submit these to online medical magazines...for sure!!! Another well done, penning.

Your poetry just grabs the reader and sucks them in. I was breathless waiting for the ending, which, while extremely sad, reveals the devastating nature of this terrible disease. Excellent work.

Wow! This is such a powerful poem... really hard to read, because it is so painful... and it is something that I can relate to.. my wife's father was schizophrenic... and told me so much about his tortured past, and how he did so many crazy things, and put her family in harm's way, several times... I knew him.. I could see he was different, and although I never saw him have an episode, the stories my wife has told me are too numerous to mention... I feel so much empathy for you --- loving and caring for someone so much, and yet being impotent in terms of helping them, IF they refuse to take their medication... there were soooo many memorable and potent lines in your poems "...I stare into his tortured face.
He shrinks away from my embrace.
He does so well while on his meds.
He's now controlled by talking heads..." 'shrinking away from my embrace' was something I saw him do time and time again... so sad...
I admire your strength and courage -- you have had so much to deal with, and certainly have so many of your own struggles... I will keep you and your family in my prayers...
I love your poem... it will be one I won't forget!! and I will share it with Charlotte (my wife) as well...
P.S. Would you let me know if you got a notification about my poem Winter's Coming? Quite a few of my fans are telling me they are not getting them...

Was your poem entered into a blind contest? We don?t get notifications. I am way behind on reviewing but I always to review your stuff. My brother is ok on his meds. Thank you so much for the extra star. I really appreciate it and the soulful review. Take care. I remember being so sad seeing my brother at my oldest sister?s wedding. He looked so alone even though he was surrounded by eight brothers who all love him deeply. Although most of them do not understand mental illness and begrudge him his pittance of disability payments.

No..it wasn't entered into a contest..that's why it is so frustrating!

My son has schizophrenia and has had it for the 12 years. When we first found out it was devestating, as well as scary. He did say the voices wanted him to take a knife from the drawer and hurt us. He saw creatures coming out of the walls. Now he's on meds and doing well with the love and protection of our family. He stills hears voices and talks to himself but we know he would never hurt us. Thank you for writing about this difficult subject.

Hi Boogienights. I really feel for your son. I think of my poor brother and have compassion and empathy for your son. Still I think you need to be careful in case a voice tells him to kill you or another. I would ask him what the voices are saying to know if you should worry. Thank you so much for the extra star. Much appreciated. Thank you also for your insightful review

I wonder if schizophrenia is allthe incumbent nature and facets of mankind coming to the fore in their separate entities, and becoming clashing an confusing manifestation. When I drank, I think my loss of control by the character numbing from the influence of the drug affecting me. Whereas the meds induce to normality. Beautfully, the storytelling aspect of your writing is superb Pam, well done, blessings, Roy

This is a very well written poem about schizophrenia and bi-polar. They are both very bad diseases that harm not only the person with the disease but others as well if they go untreated. I am sorry that happened with your brother. Blessings and prayers! love, Teri

Another brilliant poem highlighting the importance of those with mental illness getting the right help and support that they need, not only for their sake but for those around them as well. I support a lady with schizophrenia and it can be very frightening when she is in psychosis and hearing nasty voices but she is generally stable because of the meds and we have learned how best to support her when she is struggling. So I empathise truly- it must have been very difficult for you and your sister growing up, and especially when your brother threatened your sister with violence. I'm sure she wasn't terrified. I'm glad he is now on meds and getting the help he needs. Thanks for raising awareness with your poem x

Hi. I have bipolar and I sympathizer. It is not easy. Even when on meds. I'm so glad that a diagnosis was made so that effective treatment could begin.
I must say, this poem was very relatable to me. I love the awareness in this piece. You do your family a favor with this. And me as well. The rhyming and length were great for me. I enjoyed the pace of the poem as well. I really liked this one! Great work! My best wishes and God Bless.

Hi Kelly. I am bi polar as well. It is not an easy disease to cope with. But thankfully I am not schizophrenic. My poor brother can?t function in the world even with his meds. But he has a wonderful wife. And six sisters and two brothers. We don?t worry about him too much these days. Thank you for your lovely review

This needed to be said. It is important this mental problem is properly diagnosed and treated. Your poem does not seem in the least exaggerated or in any way out of order. The meds are important in order to keep the violent ones on the straight and level. Well written.

Thank you, Jim. Somebody criticized it for using rhyming and meter on such a serious subject. You said the same thing about one of my other poems. Do you mind giving your opinion on the subject? I would appreciate it. I think in your case, my rhymes may have been too bouncy clashing with the seriousness of the subject. Thanks for the great review
reply by Pantygynt on 02-Oct-2018
There is nothing frivolous about rhyme and Metre though some schemes and metrical patterns seem more heavyweight. Perhaps alternating lines of pentameters and tetrameter and an abcb or some other rhyme scheme might asset a more serious tone.

I never thought of writing that way. Something to think about. Thanks
