A tone of whimsy and daydream through this poem, appropriately so, of all the things one might do on winning a large, unlikely sum of money. Your things touched with where the money might go is all things I can relate to... from the little things I'd like to splurge and get... but not really go crazy buying big, and the list of things for helping others as well as the secret hope that, if I were to win the lotto, I hope it wouldn't cost me my good health, my good friends, my piece of mind... as money isn't everything, can't buy happiness, but ... if it could buy me more time, so I'd have more time to play with the kid, and write, well that would be nice.

Sometimes, it's probably more fun to daydream happy things that will likely never happen.

A friend once casitigated me for playing lotto (something which I do, on average, once or twice a year). He pointed out the poor risk to return ratio, with the prize being (say) a million dollars, but my $10 investment having only a 1 in 50 million chance of taking out the big one. Now, I'm no math genius (unlike some here), but I knew that. I also understood a thing we learned about when I was studying Operations Research at Uni (I don't think it's even a "thing" any more. I've tried looking it up, and drawn mostly blanks). Anyway, one way of looking at wagers of any sort is by assessing their utility value. In this case, though risk/reward says I shouldn't take the bet, the perceived benefit to me of getting a $10 million windfall so far outweighs the hurt caused by losing $10, that the bet becomes worth taking. I'm sure none of this is news to you, I just thought you might find it an interesting observation, given your mathematical skills. Plus, it more or less says in a lot of words what you said succinctly in your last sentence ;-)

So glad you also gave the meaning of the "chook raffle." I wouldn't have guessed that one. The pennif I might have guessed but dollars don't sound like pennifs. I would think just buying the chicken would be better return on the investment.

Craig, This is a very well written poem about the lottery and what it could be if you won it. You used very good words and appropriate imagery. A very well-written poem about luck and winning competitions an contests which is 20/80 20p skill and 80p luck. My shift on this device doesn't work so the p is for percentage. I once win 100p discount at a clothing shop, unfortunately I only bought for R500.00 less than 50 dollars. Lol.
