Interesting premise. Even more interesting to me, for you, is to ask if kids will care about this.
Sound them out. And I don't mean you to talk down or write down just see if it's something they care about.
Because you will lose your audience.

The chance that kids may care about their future is worth writing about. Not interested in just writing to find an audience - too many people are doing that

A well written beginning to a saga of a planet similar to ours, with the same issues of power, and corruption. I would like to red an introduction of Hugh Tundra Drifter in your beginning chapter. The character is intriguing; I'm not interested in the detailing of energy problems. Overall I think you are headed to an awesome novel.
