This is so clever. I love the details about how the dogs vie for your attention. They are so cute with the different tricks they use to gain favor and maybe an extra treat. I enjoyed reading about Howie's ritualistic turning around five times before settling down. I have two cats, and they have determined that Smokey will seek her attention from Dick, which she does by sitting on his lap. Heather claims my attention by following me around. Those pets are such treasures. judi

When the Mistress started to giggle, he knew he made headway into the deep recesses of her heart.

The boys were SO excited about me writing a story about them yesterday. The entire time I wrote, they were both lying at my feet. When I read the story out loud, they each smiled whenever they heard their names!

Patty, I don't think I've ever read such an in-depth version of the relationship between dogs and their owners. It makes for an emotional read, since our dog, Max, I swear is half human!

Enjoyed the post. You have a talent for letting the reader experience how Howie and Bernie think and react to one another and their owner (mistress). The dog's thoughts are simple and exact, with no counter feelings muddling the process. My Chihuahua can stand on her hind legs for minutes especially when she thinks there' food coming her way. Well done.

Good to hear from Bernie and Howie. I used to groom Maltese's. I loved it! I groomed all dogs and some cats, but Maltese's and Pomerians were the most dogs brought in.

You typed a 'v' in your author's notes instead of an 'l' in 'lying.

What precious little dogs you have. I'm glad Bernie got a chance to act like the only dog for a while. My dog IS an only dog after her two companions passed away last year. She jumps on my bed and curls up ON MY NECK. I have no idea why, but that's where she likes to be. Of course I scratch her ears and neck, so I'm just encouraging the annoying habit. LOL

The boys certainly are entertaining and fun. I wonder if your dog sleeps on your neck because she misses her buddies. I've had people tell me the reason my dogs react to me the way they do is because they've made me part of their pack.

This is a cute story Patty. You have captured Bernie's & Howie's personality well. I like the part about what Bernie 'says' about you not knowing it was the door not the window where the knock came from. I have kitties that act just like these two. Thank you so much for reading my indulgent Bernie and Howie stories. I absolutely LOVE writing stories like this. (I'm so glad I found a market for them; not it isn't only fun, it's lucrative.)

We go through the dance on the couch several times each day. In fact, I know if I get up to do anything, I will come back and find myself without a place to sit.
