What a fun poem and nicely illustrated, too. I DO remember the eagerness at the end of the day, just before dusk when the ice cream truck came to our neighborhood. A bit of nostalgia in your well described poem. Good luck in the contest. Marilyn

Thank you for sharing my trip back to childhood, Marilyn. I have been pleasantly surprised to learn how universal these ice cream trucks were around the country. Rod

This sweet little poem of childhood happiness reminded me of a song I heard in a folkclub once, written and performed by Stan Jardine of Birkenhead, who played with various folk groups, including the Wallasey Wreckers for a time, and later singing solo in Birkenhead folk venues. Sadly, Stan died in about 2003. It was called "The Night Shift Army" and deals with the problems of those forced to sleep during the day. The chorus goes:

"We are the night-shift army,
working the night away
Pale and drawn we greet the dawn
to sleep all through the day
To the sound of rattling dustbins
and a friendly ice-cream van
I'd like to stick his ding-dong chimes
right up the ice-cream man."

There is always an alternative viewpoint to everything!

Very nice recollection of a favorite time when the ice cream man came. Our guy, believe it or not came on a motor scooter. Nice rhyme and pace just like a summer afternoon.

I can?t say I ever saw ice cream sold out of a motor scooter. Thanks for sharing my poem, Harry. So pleased you like it. Rod

Yes, he had a blue motor scooter with a bicycle-like ice box attached over the front fender and a warming box in the back where he had hot dogs.

I must say, this is a delightful piece and so on the money as far as the subject of this little contest goes. Wow, it just took me back totally and you've described it to a tee. It's a six, but I don't have any this late of course. I like my own entry quite a bit, but for once, I DID consider voting against myself. That's rare, 'cause I'm really greedy. LOL Anyway, good luck. A winner whatever happens. mike

What kid didn't get excited when the ice cream truck driver made his or her neighborhood rounds, Anonymous Poet?
I thought you captured the anticipation quite well in your well rhymed entry for this contest.
Bravo, and best of luck!

~Dean

This poem is light and happy like it's Ice Cream Truck topic. Dreamsicles were always my choice too. I think children today are missing out since things that were an occasional treat "back in the day" are easily available at every store now.

Yes, this certainly brings back memories! I couldn't stand that inane tune blasting through the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood! LOL
Mind you, perhaps in earlier days...

Have to admit that tune became irksome when I heard it go up and down the nearby streets. Nevertheless, I can?t wait to hear it again for the first time this spring. Thanks for sharing. Rod

What a joyful poem that brings back great memories.
You have excellent rhymes and meter in the poem,
as it rings quite smoothly with some alliteration, as well.
Dreamsickle or chocolate coated, good humor for all.
Great description of the ice cream treats
and wonderful art work to match.
Makes me want to get a Dreamsickle.
Good luck in the contest

You are very welcome, Rod. The reason is many of us are from the time period when the ice cream truck was a big deal.

This is a wonderful childhood memory that I imagine every reader will undoubtedly relate to in one way or another. You've captured that youthful excitement that we all felt, with the music and the running to buy a treat. All of it is delightfully captured in this metrical and rhymed poem. The illustration is perfect too. ~ So well done. I'm sure it will be a vote-getter in this contest. Best wishes!
