This is terrific because I learned something new, as well as being entertained by your poem. I never knew this animal existed, let alone what environment and climate they live in. I hope they don't perish because of climate changes. It's sad when a species goes extinct.

Yes, BoogieNights, over the past decades as the climate warmed, pikas have moved 900 feet upslope while at lower elevations 9 out of 25 historic pika populations have been extirpated--wiped out completely.
I am glad my poem taught you something new although it is a sad fact. Thank you for your review.

I totally enjoyed reading your contest entry. I have never heard of this little critter. They would never be able to survive in the heat of Texas. LOL I wish you the best of luck with the contest.

No, Barbara, pikas never would be able to survive the Texas heat. They are so cute, that people who tried to take them downhill as pets or zoo and lab animals found out pretty quickly that they could not. Polar bears and penguins could live in a zoo; pikas cannot.
Thank you for your generous, six star review and for wishing me the best of luck in the contest.

Your poem about the pika is, in many ways, a metaphor for mankind. As we watch the pika and the encroachment on it's terrain, I can't help but see us in the same situation not so far in the future. This is very elegant writing and it has a great message. Best wishes.

Yes, Victor, the frightening thing about this poem is that we will be in this same situation in the not so far future. If it's too hot for pikas at 12,000 feet, what is the temperature like for humans near sea level? Will people have to move uphill to cooler climes like the pikas?
Thank you for your review and for wishing my poem the best.

This is a really well-written poem! It has a nice flow to the words, and great explanations for what happens to these animals during temperature change.
I've never heard of "Pikas" before. It's crazy to think that they just die if the temperature rises too much!
Great work :)

Yes, Fabiha, over the past decade 9 out of 25 pika populations have been wiped out at lower elevations. By the end of this century, pikas will only exist on only the highest peaks.
Thank you for your review.

Great use of a sonnet form to give us a non-fiction essay on the pika! I have heard of this animal but didn't know it was endangered. Thanks for broadening my horizons on effect of the ever changing climate.

Yes, lyenochka, over the past decades, pikas have been wiped out at lower elevations and scientists predict that by the end of this century, pikas will only live on the highest peaks.
Thank you for your review. I am glad my sonnet-essay broadened your horizon.

I like the rhyme/rhythm pattern in this little poem. Not really into little animal poetry, this one is nothing but cute with a sad, but possibly true? ending. You did a good job with it at any rate and I liked it.

Yes, Wendy, I'm not into cute little animal poetry either, but the pika had a story to tell. Over the past decades as the temperature warmed, pikas have moved 900 feet upslope while they have been wiped out at lower elevations. Scientists predict that by the end of this century, pikas will only be able to live on the highest mountains. Thank you for your review.

What an interesting insight through the poetic medium into the ongoing dangers to animal life posed byclmate change - threats to specific species sends a powerful message

Yes, Zanya, the more I read about pikas, the more concerned I become for them and us. Over the past decades as the temperature warmed, pikas have moved 900 feet upslope while they have been wiped out at lower elevations. Scientists predict that by the end of this century, pikas will only be able to live on the highest mountains.
Thank you for your review of my poem which sends a powerful message.
