I am behind again since I made a short trip to San Francisco. I never used the old crank telephone, but our original phone was a "partyline" with the same eavesdropping proble, Smiles- Joan

Thank you for the little bit of history, reminding us how things have changed. The first phone I remember is the dial phone how it took forever to dial a number, especially if they had a lot of 9's.

Hi Pat,
I have never used one of these but in todays society perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad thing with all that goes on behind closed doors. I just live the look and style of these old telephones and would love to have one on my hallway wall.
Great little poem.

Hi, Patricia;
Yes, that phone was a bit before my time. Although, when I was little, we did have a party line. I remember the conversation at the dinner table when it was discussed at the new cost of having a private line. My father didn't see the need, but my mother was adamant. He let her have the line but still wouldn't pay the long distance charges needed for her to call my grandmother and aunts.

Yes, Pat, I remember those phones and the party line. My grandmother lived in a little town called Judson, and there were two sisters, Cora and Dora, who operated the switchboard. They lived in the same building. They probably knew everyone's secrets. This will be interesting for people who are too young to remember party lines. You thought a bit before making a call back then, unlike today when people are on the phone all the time. Great nostalgic post. judi

three fourth should be three-fourths

There is a boy in my Sunday school class who insists his cell phone is 50 years old. I have tried explaining there were no cellphones then, but he doesn't believe it. This poem reminded me of that. I remember party lines--the world was different then for sure. Take care, my friend~Debbie

Patricia, This is a very interesting post you have done. I never used one and don't remember seeing one in person, maybe just on the computer. Very well written and very good imagery. Blessings, Teri

This brings back memories to being in Nana's house when I was very young. Her ring was three shorts and a long.Her sister in law Sara had two longs and a short.when Sara's rang Nana would pick up the phone and shush everyone.
Thank you for sharing this lovely verse and the memories.

I haven't used one of these phones, Patricia, but my parents did have a party line phone. A little later people on the party lines were even given different ring tones so that all knew if the call was for them or for another person on the same party line. (e.g. one person would have 3 short rings, and other would have one short and two long rings, etc.) Things have sure come a long way since then, haven't they?

Your poem takes this reader way back. As for the younger readers, no doubt they are thankful to have their own private cell phones now. A much more manageable size! :) Thanks for a little trip down memory lane. ~~ Connie
