A lovely poem that reflects on your times of blackberry picking, with added effects. I have never been blackberry picking before, but your poem makes it seem like such an adventure.

It sounds like it was a great day. Picking berries with friends sounds like a great time. I'm thinking about how great the jam was -- must have been delicious. :)

I have been on many fruit picking expeditions when I was very young, black current and stawberries and it is quite hard back breaking work for very little reward except that you make lots of friends and have fun along the way, your poem brought back some joyful memories Tony, love Dolly x

Thanks, Dolly. Sometimes, as you suggest, the rewards are of a different kind.

Hi Tony, this post is absolutely exquisite. I found it so moving and the whole of your first stanza is just a beautiful use of metaphor. I can honestly say it is the best poem I have read on this site since I don't know when. That first stanza was so lovely that I felt it personally and a bit weepy - the measure of a great poem.
'for in these pickings we were sealing bonds more firmly than the lids on jars of fruit, a friendship now that's crystallised in words.' So romantic - the whole of the poem is a joy to read, glad I had a 6 left - regards Dorothy

I really enjoyed reading this blank verse. It really brought back memories of blackberry picking and then making jam. The picture of blackberries is superb. Nice one. Cheers Jen.

Our minds soon tuned into the insect whirr
and hum of bees that hovered on the flowers
in this our chapel, perilous and rare,
surrounded by a thicket hedge of thorns,
and mordant fruit beyond our wildest hopes.
This was a real treat. I felt I was in the middle of this movie that your poem created and it was a sweet tale. Thank you for the trip through what must have been a very lovely memory. :)

This reminds me of times spent with my cousins. We would venture into the woods near our grandmother's house in rural Arkansas. We would find wild berries, eat them with our fingers, staining our t-shirts ad then skinny dip in a creek that was alos located near grandma's house.

Thanks for sharing this well crafted verse about a delicious memory. It takes strength and courage to go blackberrying as the thorns are fearsome. Sounds like a lot of work but you shared your labor of love.

Tony, this is the first blank verse I've read in ages and you are indeed a master of it. A beautiful poem full of imagery. The rhyme certainly isn't needed in this one. Well done, my friend~Debbie

I really admire poets who can come up with very long poem, which is indicative of how prolific the writer is. I enjoyed reading your poem, especially the last three lines, "for in these pickings, we were sealing bonds more firmly than the lids on jars of fruits, a friendship now that's crystallized in words.", Thanks for sharing. Well done.
