My father gifted me Omar Khayyam's poetry when I was eleven... As you'd expect I was lost and set it high on a shelf. (A wise decision for I'd have to grow many inches and live many years before the depth of beauty and poetic brilliance began to dawn on me)

Your poem is beautifully rendered, and your author's notes are impeccably penned.

I take this as a sign it's time, once again, to revisit Kayam's work!

This was an interesting poem. My favorite lines are: The secret buried casualties of war
Still whisper words of wisdom on the shore.
This definitely inspires the reader to try reading more unfamiliar poets on a more regular basis. I am glad you have been reading some good ones like Omar Kahayyam (and I believe his surname gets spelled differently in other places).

It is difficult to imagine someone a thousand years ago writing in Persian being discovered to be loved by other civilization, and as good as they are one needs to wonder what was lost in their translations.

Very good adherence to Kahayyam's form, Everett. Some of your quatrains are pretty deep for me, but after a couple of readings, things cleared up a bit.

You must be serious about your poetry to have researched this little or unknown Iranian poet. I found it interesting you never referred to him by name except in the title. Very nice job.

Great poem. Your author notes were much appreciated and good information in the notes about who he was. Your poem flows well, with good meter throughout the poem. Thank you for sharing.

I enjoyed this work. It's inspiring to drink in the words that are written by gained knowledge and transcribed into caution and wisdom. This type of writing allows everyone to ponder what consequences our actions bring, good or bad.

Hello Tom,
Khayyam's rhyme scheme is one of my favorites. I like to link the stanzas
as you did in the first two by repeating the "b" rhyme as the dominant one
in the next stanza. Frost's most famous poem, Stopping by Woods..." also uses this rhyme which he likely learned reading FitzGerald's translation.
If only there were a lake where liars drown, there would be many entering
in this distorted world we live in. Perhaps another circle in Dante's many rings.

"Sweet mystery of life, not found when dead,
But in anticipation free of dread,
For life begins anew with every breath
And every rising from the slumber bed."

Well said.
Best wishes
Robert
