This is a very sweet poem. Your rhyming is great with vivid details. You have a way with words and I feel the emotion in your poem. I think it is wonderful and so romantic that your husband still sends you roses! It is nice to hear that in this day and age. It is true that when love is real, it blooms and it cannot fail. Well said and good writing!

A very fine sonnet and love poem. I read it twice. I love the flow of your words and meter. The tone is deep, sincere, and feel real and magical at the same time:
That tender touch has made my world ignite --
like stars exploding on the Milky Way.
It came as no surprise that you wrote this for your husband's birthday.
I love your pivot in the third stanza where you speak how much he means to you:
But if you leave and take away your light,
I know that I will surely lose my way.
Your closing couplet reminded me of the blooming rose in "Beauty and the Beast" because it describes eternal love:
Red roses on the mantle tell the tale --
when love is real, it blooms and cannot fail.
I found only one spag--insert an apostrophe for "world's."
Thank you for sharing your superb sonnet. I wish you contest success.

This is a very beautiful poem about the pretty roses on the mantle. You used very good descriptive wording and very good imagery with the picture of the roses. I hope you both have a very happy and blessed night and Happy Birthday to your husband! love, Teri

This is a very nice love poem. You cannot go wrong when you conjoin romance and red roses. i like that you show the passion in your first verse of your new romance and the strength as your love grows through trials and the loss you would feel if your lover went away.

What a hero your husband is--many happy returns! I am certain he enjoyed this love sonnet as much as I did. Your alternating rhymes along with your "stars" simile and "bouquet" metaphor are very effective. Best wishes in the contest- Joan

Nice Shakespearean sonnet. I liked the image of the roses on the mantelpiece, that image of love appreciated, which is the pivot point of the whole poem. here we have that classic picture of two soul mates who are lost without each other, leaning on each other, finding the light of life together. And they are lost without each other. The meter is nice and upbeat, the rhyme scheme nicely crafted, and the musical elements as a whole are good. Strong closing couplet. estory
