I really enjoyed this chapter. I'm so impressed you remember the students' responses! The breathing in through the nose and holding the breath and exhaling through the mouth is something I do every night at bedtime. It helps to fall asleep. Now I know more about what the assistants check for when I'm at a doctor's visit.

Thank you so much Helen for reading, reviewing and your great comments. Only if they were trained by Mrs. Armstrong, lol.

Then I instructed them to repeat the steps only this time they were supposed to breath in using their mouths = breath(e)

They spent the rest of the class practicing and learning(.)

I'm really enjoying this, Aryr. I have a ways to go to catch up, but I will get there.

Alie,

I'm finding the subject matter quite fascinating. My daughter is a junior in Nursing school and so all of this just gives me a bit of insight into what kind of stuff she is probably learning -- or...well... learned a long time ago, I guess. But, anyway, these kinds of details thrill me. I love learning things like this! *smile*

But I did notice a few small details that need your attention. Since there are several, it will affect your rating this time, but as soon as you make the corrections, just holler and I will happily jump back over and re-rate.

Just remember to do the first version and then go back and edit carefully. Look at every single word and then each phrase - objectively. Our own work is always the hardest to criticize for some reason. I don't know it you already know and do this, but I use the ''preview" feature here for this very reason. I always think my work is pristine and reader-ready, but when I see it up here - ready to go, I ALWAYS find a million things wrong with it!! So I save it first in preview-mode. Then I can go over it in detail again and again until I THINK I've got the bugs out.

Notes:
1.) into the blood and carbon dioxide which is exhaled up the
--> the way your sentence is worded 'which' is not needed

2.) They were all listening but studying the picture (in) their text book while I talked.
--> there's also a POV issue. You cannot say whether those students were actually listening and/or studying. That pertains to what's going on in THEIR heads. All you can say is what it LOOKED like they were doing or what you HOPED they were doing. Make sense? (Or your character, I mean.)

3.) Several were taking (breaths) through their noses while others were trying to inhale via (their) mouths.

4.) I could see fingers ta(p)ping on desks as they attempted to count.
--> no taping fingers to the desks, Teach, that gets sticky!

5.) For those (who) are portraying the patient
--> when referring to people, always use the word 'who'

Thanks!

Wow, that was really helpful Robyn, thank you so much. I will watch for the 'preview' and will make the other corrections. The only one that confused me was #4 other than spelling were you suggesting they didn't tap.

taping - is like tape - ing - like scotch tape - you wrap presents with.

tapping - is like nervously fidgiting your fingers

help any? Or am I totally confused?

I must admit I never knew there wee two different methods of breatiing, (well, I did, but never really thought about it) I'm a prolific nose breather, I've decided, I don't like breaking through my mouth, not even exhaling. It looks like the class is in good order. No perceived spags, eel done, blessings, Roy

Thank you very much. Nose breathing is actually the best, the little tiny hairs are filters, most start out as nose breathers but disease or conditions change them. Again thanks, blessings in return.

I see that you're putting your background to use. This was fairly informative, but perhaps you could have touched on the danger of carbon dioxide overdose among mouth breathers.

Good point but I was trying to get through the so called normals before I brought out the abnormal and diseases etc. I am so glad you are keeping me on my toes. Thanks

continue to hold their wrist as you count their respirations, they will think you are still checking the pulse and will not interrupt you

How clever! Nurses etc. have all kinds of tricks to outwit their patients, I think. :)

As someone who has taken breathing lessons for stage and singing work i found this intriguing. We were always told to use the diaphragm and not huch the shoulders. I had no idea that a pregnant woman was unable to breathe using the diaphragm. I suppose it is obvious now you mention it but it had not occurred to me beforef. Keep going. You have me hooked as well as that class.

Ahaaa, it is great that you have learned something, just teasing you. I really do enjoy your comments. Now I have never taken singing or stage breathing lessons so I would not have thought about hunching the shoulders. Thanks so much.
reply by Pantygynt on 18-Jan-2018
People do that hunching when told to breath deeply but it doesn't expand the lung capacity at all.

Ahhhhh, I didn't think it would. Thanks.
