Hi Bill,
An extra special story here... Oscar Wolf was good enough to train younger cops to become detectives, but not good enough to be one himself. I wonder why he was overlooked?
Enter Mr. Awesome... Lieutenant Baker. He had been trained by Oscar years before. And now he was going to make his trainer pay for being insolent in calling him "Benny"... "That's Lt. Baker, Sergeant!" I would assume Oscar saw red. His blood pressure rose and, with the resulting tunnel vision, he thought he saw a little girl's face. Maybe he wanted to see a little girl's face. He wanted to make the Lieutenant look bad. He shot the supposed kidnapper in the "pump", heart, and picked up the young girl. No wonder she felt light as a feather inside the protective sheet... she wasn't there. It was an hallucination. And the supposed kidnapper was probably a homeless bum, already quite dead from an overdose of dirty drugs. No harm done, but the Lieutenant wasn't about to let him off anyway. There'd be a report of his poor judgement. The next time Oscar had a chance to shoot his weapon, he might be pointing it at Lieutenant Baker.
Bottom line, Oscar remained a loser, forever wearing a uniform and badge instead of a suit.
Nicely penned!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thanks, Kimbob. That's what is happening here. Always a bridesmaid.

My poor old father ran into this scenario when he worked for the CPR, Canadian Pacific Railway. He knew all the jobs in the office, and had worked at them for years. But three times, the Chief Clerk was up for grabs. Dad missed out on the elite position because there was a man with just a hair more seniority. Each time, he had to train the new "boss" who didn't know all the jobs. There was one joker in particular, Bob P., who was a tyrant when he took over. Sometimes authority goes right to (an empty head)!

I enjoy reading everything you post, but I must say that, when you take time out to write prose, it's always a special treat. Thanks for sharing another fine story.

It seems to me that Wolf's time was up, when one is so jaded That you shoot a dead man and make assumptions, it's hard keeping the faith when one chooses to believe that evil rules, because it doesn't. Perceptive post Bill, well done, blessings Roy

Hi Bill, the poor Sergeant didn't know what was real or not anymore. He had seen far too much, the poor man. What it will do to a man to bee in constant combat, I can't even begin to imagine. Very well written. Ulla:)))

With the tossing of an empty sheet and a unsecured wide open "kidnapping house".
It appears that Wolf has had just too many cases, and now is hallucinating.
Very well written story which keeps your readers interest from beginning to the end.
Best wishes
Mary

This is good story. I was feeling very sorry for Sergeant Wolf and very irritated at someone officer he had trained years before, feeling to treat Wolf like he was just helper. I guess Wolf had outlived his usefulness and was starting to hallucinate. The man didn't grin at him and there was no kidnapped child. It does remind me, although nothing to do with the plot of this story, there there are all too many policemen with guns rushing into the wrong location.

It seems the Sergeant had trouble deciphering who was real and who may have been dead already.
You are always out of the box; Bill and I enjoy your writing, and your imaginative pen lures me!

Love the names of your characters. Foreshadowing in the first paragraph about wolf being passed over for a promotion again!
Sounds as if the man was already dead. Wolf imagined that evil grin. Seems the girl was dead too. Hence she was light as a feather. Scary that they got the wrong house. Sounds like some real-life happenings these days with cars turning into the wrong house and getting shot! Good luck with your entry, Bill.

Thanks, Shari. I felt uninspired so I just resurrected a story from five years ago. No contest.

An unusual story and this guy did what he thought was right and he did rescue a girl her who needed rescuing, despite it not being the actual kidnapping. I think someone needs to sack the guy in the control room for releasing false information, it could have cost lives, love Dolly x

You really had us feeling for Wolf. I guess he had too many years on the force and the kidnapping situations always haunted him so that it causes him to hallucinate. I guess that's why the promotions have always eluded him. Still, that Lt should be more respectful of all his team.
