Super story. You use the starting sentence well. Great use of dialogue to note the conflict between Fred and his wife.
My favorite part:
"I'm not your enemy; I love birds. Look, see the birdfeeder in the yard. I'm a member of the Audubon society too."
A smooth skillful ending too.

A good use of the prompt. I like Bob's growing obsession and fear. That comes across well.
My chief concern is how poorly Jessica comes across. She sounds like a horrible nag. Maybe try to rewrite a few of her lines to show a little more concern?
Ignoring that, it's a good piece of work. The stuff that truly matters is right.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Hey, wouldn't you be bitchy if your spouse kept obsessing over a dumb owl? LOL

Wow an excellent short story. I really enjoyed reading it. I found it a little Steven Kingish
Which is not a bad thing as it was bordering on horror. Good luck in the competition.

This is a fantastic work about superstition.
Faith that superstition still works is the hub of this story.

Sometimes a lot depends on faithf and belief.
As we know, they can move mountains, right?
Thanks for a very enjoyable and entertaining story, Prettybluebirds. I didn't detect any spags. The story is suspenseful and well-written.

Comment from Meia (MESAYERS)
If a hoot owl calls outside your window for three nights in a row, it's supposed to mean someone is going to die soon. Ancient scholars believe the number three has mystical powers." Oh dear. I have had an owl hooting by my window for about a year. I guess this means I am safe? lol. But one more thing to worry about. I loved your story anyway good luck in the competition this was very imaginative. Kind regards Meia.x

Thanks for reading and reviewing. Just remember not to make the owl mad at you like Fred did.

This meets the contest requirements nicely by starting with the appropriate opening line. The same folklore revolves around a Raven perching at your window three times and the crow's caw. Bad things in general coming in waves of three is common throughout all folklore and mysticism so there's got to be some measure of truth there as it would be too much coincidence. This is well penned and while the end is no surprise it was an enjoyable read. All the best in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.

Thank you. Yep, I have noticed several times that events happen three times in a row.

What an intriguing take on an old wives tale haha! I love it. Goddammit, Fred. He obviously did something wrong. Well done on the short story. It flowed really nicelly and kept me going. Props.

Thank you. Yeah, he did do something wrong, he pissed the owl off. LOL

This is a good story. It seems Fred did believe the superstition and it made him go a little batty by taking down all the trees around the house. Poor Fred!

A good story with enough drama to keep the reader wondering. Good timing and well chosen words that only give a small hint of the end.
