I enjoyed this very much. It reminded me of the time when I still put up a tree. We had cats then and had to attach the top of the tree with a wire to the ceiling to keep the cats (who loved to climb the tree) from knocking it over. Very nice work with this one and thanks for the lovely and memorable trip down memory lane.

Sounds like you had adventures with your cats - we were lucky; we never had a cat who would pull the tree down - they just opened any gifts under the tree,

What a great thought to end your cute story with Patty. I really enjoy reading about Bernie & Howie's antics. You describe everything so well. The dogs are so smart. I know my little old dog can 'talk.' I like, too, that you include both of these precious animals in whatever you are doing. Will they leave the tree alone when you are gone? Congratulations on your 'new' house.

Suggestion:
There were one long box and almost a dozen others in all different sizes. 
[this sentence sounds a little odd I think because of the word 'were'. I would rearrange it like this:

There were different sizes of boxes--one long box and almost a dozen others.

I know it is your story so file 13 = trash if you wish.
