First of all. Andre, is that picture really a chihuahua? (I have never seen one close up from that angle.) I must say, much of the impact of your description of your experience, diminished for me on learning that the dog who presumedly would have defended you, as dogs often do was a tiny chihuahua. (No disrespect intended for that endearing species.)

That said, I compliment you on writing a terrific poem in an an apparently difficult form I won't even attempt to understand. Good luck is always necessary in a FS contest, and I wish you lots of it.

Yes, Don, that is a Chihuahua nose, but not my own dog's. Given her small size, her best defense is to smell danger and run and hide, not stand her ground and fight like larger breeds would. Two FanStorians shared stories of dogs chasing bears from their yards.

Yes, the Petrarchan sonnet is a more difficult form of sonnet to write than the Shakespearian.

Thank you for your generous, six star review and for wishing me lots of luck in the FS contest.

I love animal poems and hope my dog never meets a puma, he'd only want to say hello and play with it. I think your dog has a good nose and looks cute. Thank you for sharing. Good luck in the contest.

Good morning, Sis Cat: I have missed your posts so it was great to see that you have posted this wonderful rhyming poem. I am so happy that this mountain lion did not cross your path. I love how you have so successfully summed up this walk with your precious Chihuahua, Mina, into this fabulous poem. Thank you for sharing with us this excitement. I always cherish your poetry and prose writings. Much love...

Oh, thank you, Tier, for your review. It is great to post and hear from you again. I thought about you last night after I performed in Las Vegas at a poetry open mic. I will share the video with you shortly.

Yes, I am glad that puma did not cross our path . . . yet. I am glad my wonderful rhyming poem successfully summed up our walk.

Thank you for your review and stay tuned for another performance video, this time from Las Vegas!

Thank goodness Mina has a good nose and understands that it's best to go home than go on. On top of that, thank goodness you trusted your dog's instincts! I really enjoyed your poem, I love that rhyme scheme which perfectly built up your Mina's fear and tension. This is a great contest entry, and deserves to win for Mina's astuteness in taking both you and her safely home! Good luck! Sandra xxx

Yes, Sandra, I am grateful that Mina has a good nose and understanding. She also made me a better poet because she encourages me to pay attention to my surrounding.

I enjoyed writing my first Petrarchan sonnet by telling a compelling story.

Thank you for your review and for wishing my poem good luck in the contest.

I do agree with you there that our pets make us more aware of our surroundings. Having a dog as part of the family is a win win bonus for everyone. xx

What an adorable doggie, Sis. Your word choices bring to life the street that you and she walked. You've involved sight, sound and scent.

The only line I suggest a look at is the dog retreats along the road we'd strode as it changes from present to past tense.

Anyway great job and all the best to you in the contest.

Thank you, Gloria, for your review. Following my dog's lead, I paid attention to the surroundings--chimney smoke, eucalyptus trees, her growls.

As for the "we'd strode" line, the verb tense I used was the pluperfect because it refers to an event that occurred earlier than the time being considered. In plain English it would read "the dog retreats along the road we had walked moments earlier."

Thank you also for wishing me the best in the contest.

Yes, Jacqueline M Franklin, dogs teach us patience and, in my case, how to be a better poet. She observes and smells everything, forcing me to up my game and absorb more of the world around me.

Thank you for your review and for wishing me good luck in the contest.

Wise decision my friend, as animal senses should always be trusted. Wonderfully crafted piece you have delivered here with an eerie bit about it. Great work and relocatable to those in designated areas.
God bless!

Yes, Steve, my poem is so locatable that a FanStory poet who used to live in Pinole, California years ago said, "I know exactly where that's at," and she correctly guessed that I lived in the neighboring city of Hercules. As a result of my poem's specificity, I will perform it at an open mic in Pinole next week.

Thank you for your review and blessings and for calling my poem a wonderfully crafted piece."

Sis Cat: great rhyming story with your dog scents and a puma. We
have deer that roam our backyards. The neighbor has apple trees
so they gather in the summer. My dogs like to bark at the deer.
We live half a block from the river. Dog walking is great exercise
and a great way to discover a bigger world. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Nancy, not only for your generous, six star review, but for pointing out your favorite line. That line was the last line I wrote for my poem after a reviewer complained about the original line: "If cougars bite, defend yourself and fight." I read closely the recommendations of the UC Santa Cruz puma tracking program about what to do if you encountered a puma, and then I wrote several drafts of that one line to fit as much information as possible while still maintaining meter and rhyme. I am thrilled that my new line worked with you.

Yes, dog walking is superb exercise for both of us. Now that I know that pumas roam within a mile of my home, I will take the additional precaution of wearing a whistle to blow to frighten them away and also to call for help. Of course, I listen to what Mina tells me her nose knows.

    Thank you for your review.

Sis CAT: I wear warm clothes and should carry a whistle and flash light with me. My clothes are dark and I walk dogs. I have three....Italian Greyhound, Austriallan Shepherd, and Husky.

Last night, I wrote 700 words on my NaNo. Patty is done. I have 15,000 left. Somehow, I got 6 pages of kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. You get the idea.

I'm researching the Native Americans. I found some names of the people so I will use the names to make it more real sounding. I have six "probation - gang guys - being trained to ride horses at the Flying Horse Ranch. Each has issues that are in the news such as autism, abuse, PTSD, immigration. They are not throw away guys. With love, patience and hot meals they are being mentored by army guys. Ideas.... The owner gave the ranch over to the army guys to train and give horseback riding lessons. Still trying to make my bad guy bad... He had a PTSD anxiety attack.
An Apache lady gave him a dog to have a friend.
This is the middle stress.........LOL. Patty is already done. advice???? I'll fly back. nancy

I thank you for your notes, SisCat. It brought clarity to this write. I no longer have one but I trust dogs implicitly. I often let my sons roam in the woods with my Golden lab alone when quite small. I was criticized for doing so but always knew that he would be the protector or usher them back to the house.

Yes, dogs are great protectors. Two reviewers shared stories about dogs who chased bears off of their properties. Dog's sense of smell and intuition are not to be underestimated. Thank you for your review.

You're right about the adventure of walking with a dog. Mine reads grass and leaves like she's reading a book. I was not familiar with the rhyme scheme that you used, but found that it supported your story/poem beautifully. Thanks for sharing. Caroline

Yes, Caroline, the rhyme scheme and structure of the Petrarchan sonnet supported my story/poem in a way that the Shakespearian sonnet would not. Yes, my dog reads the grass (and anything else) like she's reading a book. Thank you for your review.
