This haiku is quite powerful. Such emotive lines that make you read over and over and look at the picture, thinking about the man sleeping on the cardboard in the rain. Every time it rains I think of the homeless, how sad. Haiku can say is so much and deep emotion can manifest from them, Giddy

Thank you for sharing the experience that inspired your poem. It is quite evocative and the vivid scene is striking and disturbing! The black and white photograph you added reinforces the mood. Sighs- Joan

I know. It's everywhere. It always was and always will be. I feel heartless when I keep walking...but I can't get poor enough to save the poor, there's always more. This is lovely, blessings....

Amazing way to put that into just five, seven, and five syllables. The picture you used goes well with this. Your haiku is emotive. Making me feel for that man. Good writing!

MariVal,
What a horribly sad and despondent scene! I can't imagine that kind of life -- even in yucky weather?? wow.
A painful and very observant piece. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, I'm missed you - where you been, girl?

Yes and how succinctly it captures the tale of homelessness, in our times, in all its dire loneliness and humiliation - as the late autumnal rain beats down

I spent the morning in meetings with homeless service providers in Chicago, so this issue has been on my mind today. I'll soon be walking to the train and passing homeless people on my way. It is a population easily overlooked. Poems like this help shed light on their humanity and remind us of the need for compassion. The "wet and gray" look of the picture and the poem set the right mood for your reflection.

Thanks for sharing your observant haiku and your compassion for the homeless. Hopefully, he can get in touch with the many places which offer shelter and food. I find your use of a "Thursday afternoon" gives it a quality of what we take for granted so the homeless man's plight is more striking.
