It is always interesting and sometimes fascinating to view and learn about other cultures. Especially food, but also others aspect too. Seeing it as a young child, I'm sure, has a profound effect on how you see that culture as an adult. A very interesting story.

This short essay is an exquisite depiction of an era and a culture. It is especially noteworthy that the nine-year-old and her father were from a different culture, yet fit in so well, probably because of the father's generosity. What really makes this short piece work is your ability to PUT US THERE in that small store and your selection of descriptive details, especially those "feet." What an indelible memory. A very well-written non-fiction story about the culture of the African American people in the fifties. I don't think the culture changed and they still eat those pickled pigs feet for the same reasons.
