I enjoyed reading your very patriotic sonnet. It had excellent rhyme and rhythm and portrayed a very meaningful message. Good luck in the competition.

A very well-written sonnet and tribute of honor to the American flag that is the pride of many Americans despite the uproar and differences of opinions of indivoduals the flag still flies.

Hi, Irish! Thanks so much for the wonderful review! This is my first attempt at a sonnet, so wasn't sure how it would come out. And It was definitely inspired by the recent unfortunate displays of ignorance to our flag going on in our own country today! Again, I thank you so much for the 5 star review and am so happy that you enjoyed my sonnet! Have a beautiful weekend!

I would have given this 10 stars if I had them. Yes, the recent displays are appalling, and I am ashamed that Americans would act so ignorantly. This sonnet is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Thank you so, so much! I am so honored that you think this sonnet that worthy... I, too, am dismayed that so many Americans are so ignorant and want to act in disgrace of their own flag... the very one that has allowed them the multitude of freedoms that so many others around the world could only dream of having! Again, thank you for the lovely words!

This is a very nicely written sonnet about the flag. You used very good descriptive wording and very good imagery with the picture of the flag. Great job. Blessings, Teri

This speaks the glory of a nation would never vanish overnight or at the instance of less powerful nation administration, by degrees people would care and contribute to retain; I liked.

Mimi,

Your poem was easy - flowing and easy to read. American history is so important, yet some people still underestimate our need for it.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

This sonnet, Old Glory, is put together with terrific iambic pentameter and a beautiful rhyme scheme. It joins all my favorite sonnets which hold a special place for me. They are difficult to get all the nuts and bolts turning and holding together a work, that then must command the hearts and minds of the readers. This is one of those high water mark poems.

Thank you so much for this beautiful review of my first sonnet. This is actually the first poem I've written in quite a while (have only ever written for enjoyment and fun - with work, not much time), but since my recent retirement and finding this site, decided to try my hand at something new! Again, thank you so much for the great review - so happy that you enjoyed!

Terrific poem, Mimi. I am not an American, but I felt the pride you have in your country's history and ongoing fight for freedom at home and abroad. These days are not easy for you, and we feel your despair and sorrow up here in Canada too. This is a very good entry for the Sonnet Poetry contest, and I wish you all the luck.
I have a couple of minor suggestions,
"Despoils her honor shrouded and obscured" ... (I'm thinking
Despoil her honor shrouded and obscured)

"In gesture sways in lithe beatitude" ...( I'm thinking
In gesture sways her lithe beatitude)

"Though hate, despair and sorrow shall she face" ... (I'm thinking
Though hate, despair and sorrow she shall face)

"Her stage for Freedom endless shall survive" ...(I'm thinking
Her stage for endless Freedom shall survive)

"To you, Old Glory, stand, in honor, I" ...(I'd omit one comma.
To you, Old Glory, stand in honor, I )

Nicely penned, my dear! Good for you.
cheers,
Kimbob

Thank you so much for the great feedback! And I greatly appreciate your insightful suggestions - quite remarkably, I actually added the "s" in despoil after toiling over; however, now that you have pinpointed this, too, I believe I will make the change back! Too, I originally wrote, as you suggested, "she shall face," switching the two words around at the last moment. Again, I thank you for suggesting its reversal... I agree and do believe it does create a better flow! Your other suggestions on the comma, personalization of "her" lithe beatitude and suggestion of "Freedom endless" to "endless Freedom" are great! Thank you again for such the 5 stars, the wonderful review and extremely helpful suggestions! Have a grand day!

Hey there - very nicely iambic metered sonnet. Great when read aloud. Should be made into a song of "You're a Grand Old Flag" type.
Usually, sonnets are of a romantic nature but this is a great poem nonetheless!
Nice to hear some pro-America work on this site. lol
Best of luck.

Hi, Octavia! Thank you so much for reviewing and the great feedback. I'm so glad you enjoyed! I've recently retired with plans to work on cleaning out all the long-neglected nooks, crannys, junk drawers and attic in the house; however, I decided it was much more fun to dust-off my long-lost hobby of poetry writing! LOL! This is my first in several years and am so happy that you enjoyed! Have a wonderful day!
