A very well-written piece. It very difficult to learn English as a second language. There are many rules in English that we don't use in Afrikaans that can make a learner confused.

It is said that English is the most difficult language in the world for non-native speakers to learn.

Teaching Spanish-speakers the language would be interesting no doubt, and pose many learning opportunities.

Those who can, teach.

A most commendable "General Non-Fiction" post, Maria. I would love having you teach me English. Of course, I would love having you teach me "anything" as well! You are an "awesome writer, and beautiful too!" Best wishes for; "Good health and happiness always."

I found this to be an excellent little article on the vagaries of the English language. Another "bone of contention" would be the the English word spellings and the way you pronounce them. Words like knife, enough, rough, tough etc.

Death being a he, as in Spanish it's 'la muerte' which is feminine. ~ this reminds me of how I find it funny that the Germans have the sun as feminine and the moon as masculine!

In Spanish it is 'llueve a c¡ntaros', which is slightly more logical because a c¡ntaro is a pitcher. ~ then tell them the English expression of "pouring by the buckets"

English is special because, even though there are rules, there are even more exceptions. ~ Precisely. Well said.

Even though I was born to the English language, I still puzzle over some these points, too. I think it's because American English is such a conglomeration of other languages.

This was informative as well as entertaining. 8 -)
