Man is his own worst enemy and his own best friend. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read. There is very good imagery.

This essay on self-control is very general but at the same time very important to how each us react to life's situations that must deal with. I think self-control defines who we are as individuals. It's not a simple concept as your essays explores the concept of self-control.

Yon Cassius hath a lean and hungry look. He thinks too much. Such men are dangerous. Good quotes, some good interpretations, some debatable notions,
in a quite readable style. Excellent.

This is very interesting and well-written. There are several statements that need qualifying and some which are hard to accept. Take the following, where I have annotated with the comments [ok], [? - questionable], [?? - false or meaningless].

"The self is our personality or ego [ok]. It is the source of all humanity's woes and problems [?]. It is an artificial (man-made) [??] mind created by its ability to think, feel and experience its worldly existence [ok]. It is the differentiating factor between the human animal and all other natural life forms [?]. It seeks to be independent in its self-defined universe [ok], even though there is no such thing as independence for any life form [?]. All life is dependent on all [??] other life in order to "be".[?]"

"We are all born geniuses [??]; society de-geniuses us [?]." R. Buckminster (Bucky) Fuller. See also your following para'. This is somewhat like "Man is born free but he is everywhere in chains." J-J. Rousseau. Wouldn't it be truer to say that almost any education by society will blind you - to some extent - as well as enlightening you? Contrast also with your para' beginning "Literacy has a huge impact ..."

"The only time that exists in truth is the moment we call NOW. There is no such thing as past or future in truth." It could equally be argued that the present is largely an illusion; or, that the present is eel-like, slipping away as we grab it, so that even when not idly remembering the past or dreaming of some future, we are nearly always living in the (maybe immediate) past and/or planning for the (possibly immediate) future. Think of a boxer, an athlete who should be totally 'in the moment' in his fight; he still feels or remembers the pain of that last punch to his ribs and ducks to avoid a future blow to his head, while planning an attacking combination of his own.

I liked your final para' and thought there was much truth in it. My comments are not intended to be aggressive or dismissive in any way; this piece was among the most thought-provoking I've read on FanStory. Anyway, I hope you will excuse my ego!

An intense read. One which offers deep understanding and introduction or re-introduction. The genius minds of a few human beings. It has taken all of my 8 decades to become the person I am today. I live fully in the Here and Now. Life is much less complicated this way. I truly enjoyed your essay, Cogitator. Thank you for the depth of your writing and knowledge.

Wow, this is so deep I feel my mind about to explode from all the knowledge you packed into this piece. Deeply insightful. I totally agree with the quote you included by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For many people thinking is just too much work and this is partly whey the world is so messed up. Thanks for sharing.

Hi there, another great article. I really do enjoy to read your great analysis what it means to be us. You make quite a few great references. It all makes me think; what is the greater meaning, and is there any? All the best. Ulla:)))

Thank you so very much, my friend, for another brilliant article.

I've just posted it on my Facebook page, and has been shared - already! - by several other pages. It's in my page at this link:

I must buy the book to read at leisure and to keep as a reference.

You make a lot of sense. If we could forgo the ego and live in truth and fact, what amazing people we would be. As you say, we are the only animal with this trait, I wonder why we do it? Why do we put silly ideas into our children from birth? It won't stop happening. I really enjoyed reading this, it certainly made me stop and think. All your work does. Well done. :) Sandra xx
