I don't know who started the idea of tearing down the old just because ...but it is not right when we don't understand where we are today.
This free verse makes a lot of sense and truly is a great piece of writing

Hi Dan, You make a lot of sense here. I am so horrified by what is happening all over the world. There seems an escalation in violence everywhere. You are well written and relevant in today's history being made. Take care. xoxo Kiwi

My thoughts exactly today. I live here in Virginia. I don't see why other statues, reflecting everyone's views, couldn't have been erected, instead of these just torn down. Then it dawned on me...it's not about the statues, it's about hate. A shame. Blessings...

Thanks for the comments. You are right it is about hate. Still you seem to understand my idea spread it to others in your area. New Statues to show the movement of history can also teach an end to hate. I saw a recent movie about George Wallace and never knew how he converted in the end. After he was shot he returned to a Black Church in his wheel chair went inside and asked their forgiveness and they gave it. This show be enshrined in a monument to be shared with all.

It really should. I didn't know that. But they aren't worried about building, just destroying, it will be something else next week, they are obsessed with hate, in my opinion.

Another great statement in this poem Dan. I agree with it. Good job on the rhyme & smooth flow, but most of all the message.

People need to look at themselves when they are destroying property. It is ok to peaceful protests, but some just want to be there to cause trouble & many times succeed in doing that.

Thanks for sharing. Jan

This would be a good thing to do, save the old and build new. Unfortunately people are too blinded by hate to see a reasonable solution to today's madness. Well said.

I wanted to comment on this poem, in light of the events in the country over the past weekend. I think I understand the sentiments of your poem, and your true sadness over the kind of violence we are descending into here. It does seem to me that the reaction we seem to be having is one not of love, but the same hate directed at a politically incorrect group. And I agree that tearing down all these parts of history is not the answer. Perhaps building new ones is. Some southerners are decendants of civil war veterans, through no fault of their own, who fought for the confederacy as conscripts. Don't forget, the south had a draft before the union did. In my opinion, they died tragic deaths and all these people want to do is honor the memory of their ancestors who died in the war. I would support maybe replacing some of the confederate monuments with a monument to the black soldiers who fought for the union. It seems to me a better way forward, but then, who am I. But just tearing down these monuments unilaterally like this socialist group did in Durham is not the way, I believe. Another slippery slope is how are we defining free speech in America in all this? If hate speech is not covered by the first amendment, then who defines hate speech? And what defines it? I think we are going in a dangerous direction if we are going to limit or even deny free speech in the country. Aren't we going in the direction of Mao T'se Tung, or the Taliban, or ISIS? This is actually the heart of fascism as defined by Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler. It has to be pointed out that someone issued a permit with these alt right groups to protest at that monument. There has to be some police accountablilty for the failure of preventing a riot from them. Or else don't issue the permit on the grounds of public safety. We need leadership from the government, but unfortunately all they care about is money, and the companies who support them just watch what's trending on the internet and worry about who might buy or not buy their products. I have to be skeptical of protesters who appeared out of the woodwork to protest these monuments when it became popular on the media. After all, these monuments have been around for a hundred years and nobody said boo. I think a lot of them just want to look cool supporting something popular. Lets think about what we are doing here estory

Thanks for the comments. So you are one of the few to agree with President Trump and what he actually said. He said the very same thing you are saying but because so many hate him they do not listen to the wise words he chose to say.

This poem is a possible answer to the Confederate statue question. I say keep the statues but house them in a Civil War Museum and explain the history of the time and artifacts. This way both sides of that war can be remembered and part of history doesn't have to be erased. If we remove the statues maybe we should erase this chapter out of history books too.

Keep writing

How many monuments have the "White racists" destroyed? How many stores looted and burned? Monuments tell us how we got here. Perhaps here really is no good,
and all the "heroes" that made this fouled up nation just lowlifes. I don't think so.
Excellent post.

I fear we re facing a huge war Korea and the USA, with Europe being drawn into it and the other Asian nations...with atomic war it may not even get that far. Th cruelness of man caused the fall from grace and the lives we lead today-life's where unlike in Eden, not everything is automatically provided, yet consumers want more, more! The more they have the more they want....this is a fine poem and raised so excellent points. It is a scary time to be alive. Kind regards Meia.

I think this was a magnificent tribute-appeal - or appeal-tribute - to what is going on in your country, especially since the beginning of the year. I feel that monuments have their place in our lives - good and bad.
The bad memories remind us and warn us;
the good memories also remind us and encourage us.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this poem.
