You raise some very poignant points about ask soul searching questions about why people act the way they do. It's a very tumultuous time in this country, at a turning point for how we as a nation will interact

Hi Dan,
I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but the near rhymes seem to reflect the unrest of the country today. I agree with you, destruction is not the answer. Neither is trying to erase our 'history' by pulling things down now. I read something that said there is no one alive today that was a slave and no one alive today that owned a slave. To me that statement is strong and means that history is exactly that. We need to focus on growth in the future and not dwell on the past. Destroying monuments won't change the facts. Erect monuments to those who fought for the liberties and equality of all people. We can't change where we came from but we can certainly orchestrate a better future if we pull together in a positive way.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Dan:
Thanks for your thoughtful poem. I live in Richmond, Virginia. The statues here are undeniable signs of Richmond's history -- of what has been done and suffered here. Mere erasure would be a form of historical denial. Destroying or removing the structures eliminates opportunities for productively using our past. Critical contextualization is the better alternative. Much could be added: plaques concerning the war itself, disputes over slavery, Richmond's and Virginia's roles in the Confederacy, The wide green medians on the avenue provide open space for new sculptures of those who resisted slavery, and the Confederacy. Perhaps America can begin to become great by acknowledging and confronting its past with thoughtful monuments, memorials and critical interventions.

Thanks for the comments. Thanks for the six stars. Yes we can build new monuments that show the time of growth thru the pains of history. Spread the idea to others as well.

Cheers, Danpald;
-you so truly right, that we should move forward by building new monuments and new ideals than taking down the old ones. Very cleverly written creative piece of poetry written in a somewhat rhyming and free verse style.
-I enjoyed the picture which was very supportive and appropriate for the conceptual theme of your writing and a good choice.
-Thanks for sharing and take care and have a good one.

This is certainly relevant to the happenings of today. How true your message is and if only it could reach out even further. Great presentation of colour and verse too.

Today's world is full of unrest and violence, but we need to learn from the past, and work on building a better future. Your well written, free verse poem says it all. I especially like the line, all must seek inside to hear. Most of us know right from wrong, but search outside for answers.

Fear is definitely present and in the air of many nations on our planet at present friend... it is crazy! But I believe destroying old monuments is not the way to go, those monument are a testament to the mood of those times be it good or bad... that is history, you can't just erase it. Excellent thought provoking post friend!!

As you suggest, the way forward is to re-build. Nothing is achieved by the act tearing down. There seems to be so much extremism about these days and it is a monumental task to build again but, in so doing, it makes a better country for all.
