I didn't know the ominous omen pearls have in folklore. I wore my grandmother's pearls on my wedding day and I have been married for 31 years Maybe the time it takes for pearls to be made correlates to the years of happy marriage. I have only seen white pearls.

Keep writing

Joan

I wore my mothers too. It's funny what you learn when you Google. Thank you so much for going back and finding this one. I'm glad you can relate to the nicer side of pearls. Personally, I think pearls are so elegant and add a touch of class! I bet they looked lovely on you, Joan. Thanks again, my friend. :) Sandra xx

Thank you so much, my dear Kay. I love pearls, my mother left me hers and I when I wear them it brings her close. The only tears they bring is because I miss her. Big hugs, my friend. :) Sandra xxx

I must say you answered the challenge very well. Love the third stanza. Good wording. I find no fault. I was thinking about the actress Jean Simmons once seeing her act wearing them in her hair.

You spoil me, Ben!! Thank you so much for another 6 stars. I remember that too! Gosh, that was a long time ago. :( I love my pearls, they were left to me by my dear mother and when I wear them I can feel her near. More hugs coming to you, my very dear friend. :) Sandy xxx

Very good!

My favorite stanza:
The timeless beauty of the pearl, created over years,
is said to give the bearer many sad and troubled tears;
that if your husband gives them he is sure to make you cry,
but this is just another myth, another folklore lie.

This is a lovely poem, Sandra, as is your author's note. Nicely done post, worded beautifully in honor of the pearl. Poem reads smoothly and rhymes well. Great message, too. Marilyn

Lucky you having your mom's pearls. I have a few items of my mom's clothing that I wear. Her sweater is like having her arms wrapped around me. Great feeling. :) Marilyn

So if you're given pearls to wear upon your wedding day
don't listen to the pessimists, as love will guide the way.

Sandra, this is most impressive - and your words ring true - it's said that pearls bring sadness and tears - well, I've had both, but that was before my pearls were given me - don't they say the same about opals?

I wish I had a six for you - a most enjoyable read, my friend.

Margaret

Just knowing you thought it was enough to be awarded the 6, is enough for me, my friend. Thank you. I'll have to look up the opals now that you've mentioned them, I have to know the answers! Big hugs. :) Sandra xx

Lovely sonnet. I never cared much for pearls...too plain and pale. THey are better on a fair-skinned woman, like you, for example. I'm darker, being of Ukrainian heritage. I prefer bold colors. Pastels and whites make me look gray! LOL

wedding dress, and silken veil <-- Remove comma.

Thanks, Phyllis, I can imagine you in bright, bold colours, they would really suit you. But you're right, pearls suit me, which is lucky because my mum left me hers in her will. :)) Big hugs, my friend. :) Sandra xxxx

Thank you so much, Pam, for another of your wonderful reviews. The picture is part of the Picture This challenge group, we all have to write about what we 'see' in the picture. It's surprising how many different poems come from it. Pearls are my favourite, my mother's too. She left me her beautiful pearl necklace when she died, and wearing them give me comfort as I feel that she's still with me. I'm so pleased you liked my take, and enjoyed my author's notes. Big hugs, my dear friend. :) xxx Sandra

You are very welcome, Sandra. My mother had a pearl necklace that I now have, as well. I did like the choice of the picture and your poem.

Hello Sandra,
Well, at least something good came out of eating that apple of knowledge -
A lake of pearls, both black and white.
I'll have to go on a quest for the long lost lake.
Sounds like a great plot for a new Indiana Jones movie.
Loved your interpretation of the picture
and excellent poem and interesting author notes
If the marriage doesn't work out, she can always sell the pearls
Interesting how Adams "black pearls" symbolize wealth
Well done
RS

Sorry, Robert, I beat you to it! I'm wearing them now!! LOL! Thank you so much for your lovely review, my friend, I'm glad you enjoyed the poem and author's notes. It was fun researching the myths and facts of the pearl. Big hugs!! :) Sandra xxx

I'd never heard the myth about pearls signifying anything negative following one receiving them.

The evolution of a pearl is fraught with possibilities of symbolism.

I love your message of positivity, Sandra. You myth-crasher you!

LOL, Jay! You are so funny. I've been reading a few of the other poems regarding the pearls, some said they would never wear them on their wedding day because it was a bad omen. So, me being me, I went searching on Google and completely smashed that myth. I love my pearls, they are the nicest of any of my jewellery.

Thank you so very much for the 6 stars, my friend, that was so kind of you. :))

How is the script coming along and your novels? I'm having a lot of trouble trying to write a good query letter, it's not easy! I think I have the synopsis done, but it's no good if I can't get them past the query letter! And I thought writing the novel was the hard part!! You never warned me, Jay!! LOL. I hope you have lots of success with yours, my friend and don't forget to let me know when they are published. Big hugs. Sandra xxxx
