What a touching story this is! Kudos to you for bending the rules to allow this to happen. Sometimes common sense just has to take precedence.

Is this still a rule in that hospital in the city that you live in (that dogs aren't allowed in)? I live in Calgary, AB, Canada, and in a relatively new hospital close to where I live, they now allow dogs to visit the patient. They seem to realize the therapeutic benefit of owner and pet being able to see one another, and that it does "calm" the patient, as you mention in your story.

I was glad to read that your nurse administrator also felt it was a good thing that you did. I enjoyed reading this 'feel good' story. Even though the patient died, it is still a very heart-warming story.

Well done! ~ ~ Connie

Thank you so much for reading and review and for your wonderful comments. This was actually written as a fond memory which took place over 30 years ago. Its nice to communicate with a fellow Canadian. I relocated to the USA about 20 years ago but originally from the Toronto Ontario area. Again thanks.

Alie,

I think this story shows that you really have a heart for your patient's needs beyond the physical. Definitely the kind of nurse I would want taking care of my own family. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi aryr. Nurses are compassionate people who have balanced their yin and yang--their compassion with their practical knowledge of nursing. Animals can offer such positive drive to get better because people love their animals and vice versa. In this case the gentleman didn't make it, but you gave everyone in the situation a gift of love. Therapy animals can be brought into hospitals in certain settings. I know this because I took one of my dogs, a therapy dog, into a hospital we were assigned as well as a nursing home. I enjoyed reading you story. Marilyn

Thank you Marilyn for reading and reviewing, unfortunately this was about 30 years ago before dogs were allowed in hospitals. I was so glad when therapy animals were allowed.

Animals are terrific healers. They give so much of themselves to us. I love animals, especially dogs. I've just spent the past 3 days at the hospital with my ex-husband/housemate who has a lot of health issues. He was discharged today. My brain is totally fried and I'm exhausted. Way behind in reading and reviewing. Now there will be post-hospitalization appointments. I give nurses (and all medical staff, but particularly nurses) a lot of credit. They are amazing people. You're an angel. Jesus said some have entertained angels unaware. You were this man' angel. God bless you for bringing comfort to both he and Sam. They will be waiting for you in heaven.

Thank you for your kind comments. I have been asked many times why I gave up 30 years ICU nursing for hospice nursing (did it 13 years) and my answer was always the same- 'to help people die with dignity and to die well.'

It was a normal Saturday, in fact(comma) a normal day for unit activity.
His wife, his son (comma) and daughter-in-law
Hospital have specific (hospital should be plural)
I spoke with the family about the dogs size (dog's possessive)
After a few minutes of silence (comma) she commented, ".
But still (comma) dogs are not

The story is great, but I have to take exception to a few things.
Dogs carry no more germs on them than humans.
I can understand not allowing them in ICU (to a degree).
It has been proven that a beloved pet can be more beneficial to a sick
or dying patient than people, and even medicine.
My little Shih-Tzu, Glen Boy, was a registered therapy dog,
and he was permitted, and welcomed, in any medical facility.
Having said that, I applaud your actions and compassion for
a dying man's love for his dog. You and the dog did God's work that day,
and I'm sure He applauds your actions as well.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I have made the corrections you indicated. Trust me I am well aware that it was a somewhat silly rule but we are talking about 30 years ago. Things were not advanced. I truly believe in and appreciate therapy dogs of all sizes.

aryr,
What a sad story with a great message of love. Thank you for sharing it. I am happy that you did not get in trouble, that the man & dog were able to spend his last minutes together, that the family was happy about your actions. I am sorry the man did not make it. I am sure the little dog was upset over that, too. Good job for caring. You were an angel. Jan

thank you for sharing this story of reuniting this man with his beloved dog for a goodbye. Your story is told and the content is good.

With that being said, your sentence structure and grammar use needs some work. I would suggest you read the piece out loud to see how the words sound the way you have put them together.

Next, I would suggest you read and use the principles from a good grammar and style guide. I highly recommend 'Elements of Style 2017.'

What a delightful story and what an understanding superior you had. While appreciating the need for sterility I think sometimes the regulations are too draconian. In this country even flowers are now banned from wards. If I was going to die anyway I would rather it be from an infection caught from a beloved pet or plant than from an overdose of sterility.

Oh I do so agree with you, sometimes the rules have to be either broken or bent a little. I was lucky that in most of my career I had compassionate supervisors and when I became one I made sure I followed my mentors. Thanks so much for reading.

What a beautiful story, Aryr. I bet you have a lot more to share similar to this one.
Being a nurse must be a wonderful job.
I wish you wrote more often. You do it very well.
Thanks for sharing.

This speaks how at the instance of care and proper medical treatment and help and support of the people the challenge was met and the dog was saved; I liked.
