Dear Mr. Hogg,
First off, I had the pleasure of visiting Fairhope year before last and loved it - beautiful, beautiful. We stayed at the Grand Hotel, facing the water - what a lovely place.
As to your piece, why would you lump all Americans together as arrogant? And I d wonder why you brought up unpleasant facts about America without counter balancing them with good ones. I, personally don't know anyone who thinks Americans are perfect, certainly not now, with the Left's determination to crucify the President at any cost, but I am also proud to be an American and a conservative and think we are - as a country - as a people - basically good. I also think that people who do not like us and don't want to abide by our laws, civil and moral code - our way of life, should not be admitted into our country, and for those already here, no sanctuary cities - this is another subject, but does have to do with America and what we stand for and what we should not tolerate.
I don't know this for a fact but I'd bet that none of the pilots and bombardiers in the raids you spoke of knew they were killing innocent elderly, women and children. they would certainly not personally kill them, like the Japanese did. Anyway, I see your point but I also see the other side.
Respectfully,
Katharine - pome lover

Hi Katharine - thanks for reading and your comments. My intention was not to be negative towards Americans. I truly believe that we live in the greatest nation on earth. An earlier reviewer made a poignant observation about people who say they are proud to be Americans. Her point was that it might be more accurate to say we are lucky to be Americans. Could have just have easily been born in one of the world's hell-holes.

well, my parents were from Georgia - chances were pretty good I'd have been born there. (kidding)

You wrote, "...attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but the fire raids were move devestating." ---devAstating. And "more" instead of "move."

This essay is very interesting and I like the easy way you put our nation's ugly history out there so matter-of-factly. You're right. Some people will not like the essay. I do. I don't like hiding from ugly things.

Nice job.

Gosh... I really love the fact that I'm glad that I'm not the only that sees how arrogant and haughty Americans are, and I'm an American. It pisses me off that we tend to look down on other cultures yet here we are considered one of the countries with high crimes and have a bad education system when other countries are progressing well. Smh. This deserves more than 5 stars.

Thanks for reading and your kind comments. The fact that we see the warts doesn't make us any less 'American'. Bill
