An informative piece Brett about the performance of senior drivers and how to improve on that?
Do we make it mandatory at the age of 85...
Your driving abilities will go through a garner of tests more supreme than today's standards or...
Retire them?
Are there studies on this?

True technology in the Auto Industry has come a
long way this past decade.
I am marveled by it all.
You state a lot of these advancements will become
mandatory by certain future years...
This is rich in theme as well as imagery.

As an older person, though it is true that some of us are pretty scary drivers, it is my opinion that the most inconsiderate and dangerous drivers on the roads today are young people who seem to be forever in a tearing hurry - racing in front of you to screech on breaks at a red light - or weaving in and out of traffic (a wreck waiting to happen) with the possibility of their demise never entering their heads.
And as to the new technology to which you referred - supposedly making driving easier for seniors, it is exactly ALL THE NEW TECHNOLOGY and instruction manuals as thick as a 700 page novel that has seniors confused and is driving them/us to drink.
Simplicity is the answer - make things simpler to understand. And if they take CD players out of cars I will keep mine forever.
Advancements in car manufacturing may help some, but like these easy-to-use
cell phones for seniors, I think the same thing should apply to cars.
Also, the same way seniors don't want to pay for all the fancy bells and whistles on cell phones, they don't want to pay for a lot of the same things that they don't use on cars.
And that is my humble opinion.

This is a good write. I'm a senior and I agree with it. The necessity for seniors to drive is paramount in their lives. When that privilege is taken away, so goes their independence. Many people do not recognize when they are not able to drive safely. In the future, driverless cars will help eliminate this problem. Marilyn

Great write Brett and sadly I have to agree because I am sure i will upset many seniors with this statement I concur with you.
It's a sad situation that technology is required to assist drivers to make decisions for them. You would like to think that anyone behind the wheel has the self responsibility to do so and has full control of their vehicle at all times. Driverless vehicle technology sounds scary just like pilot free aeroplanes. I would always like to the think that the human brain with emotional and rational reasoning Will always be there in the background to take control on a whim.
Who knows where technology will end.
Being a senior citizen myself(just lol) I would like to think I have the faculties and the rationale to be a responsible driver and stop when I lose my reaction time.
I think it is a pride thing with most senior citizens in the twilight of their driving careers.

A very well-written article. The statistics show seniors are most prone to accidents. It is possible because their reflexes slowed down and the younget generation wants to go faster.
