A very well-written free verse about the old tree that seems to be dead, but he still have a purpose. The birds find it a great resting place. Old things still have the ability to surprise the mind.

Your tree is such an inspiration and being old, and looking to be in one of Dean Kuch's writings...it still very much has life and seems a lot of pride, and like the cockatoos around it don't mind with what it is contending with, and appreciate how you tell a story, that it still serves a purpose....And being an older person, it gives me all hope to read about a tree as such as this, as we are all part of nature's plan, and some days are harder than others....we still strive to live them out the best we can....or until a lightening strike.

Best Wishes for your wonderful entry...Caressa_08

Very many thanks for your six-star review, Caressa. Trees often seem to have some hidden vestiges of life, even when they appear quite dead. My wife says much the same of me! Tony

Came back to this several times today, Tony. I am not a writer of free verse - well hardly ever - and I have no idea the why and wherefore of it. I wanted to point out what made this so special, but I can't seem to get the thoughts to work themselves into a complete sentence. Perhaps if I leave out all but the basics and say : Simplicity, unambiguous relatability, visuals, pathos, humor. It has them all and was such a joy to read in the still of the pre-dawn morning. - Wendy

Always good to hear from you, Wendy. Thank you very much for the review. I'm persisting with a little free verse now and again, hoping to get more comfortable with it. Best wishes, Tony

Unbelievable piece of free verse writing Tony, your words bring this tree to my eyes and with it nature's beauty blossoms within the trees dead limbs.
A wonderful read.
Good luck in the contest

Many Cheers, Tony;
-the promising longevity of life is introduced artistically and dramatically within this poem. With the use of alliteration and astute timing and inert rhythm makes for a very pleasant and dramatic reading.
-I found myself thoroughly entertained and enriched, embossed and proud to be alive and struggling to be alive like this tree. For the determination to stay alive increases the intensity that this poem relates to, "Old things surprise; so, too, will I".
-This longevity and aging go hand-in-hand within this composition and is well constructed to enjambment to flow smoothly.
-Good luck in the contest, Tony, and take care and have a good one.

Your wife can be quite humorous at times and so is mine. Somewhere she finds a spark in me that seems to be hidden at times and brings it out to the open or sometimes he only brings it out in the open when she wants me to do something for as life empty the garbage or paint inside the house or......
take care my friend and have a good one.

Ah, I see the image of the gnarled old tree is your own as well as this striking free verse poetic fare, Tony.
That must mean you're a bit of an amateur photographer, as I am.
Nice work,
good luck to you.
~Dean

This is a tree most would have cut down years ago. But although it has no leaves it still seems to draw in life. The cockatoos seem to like it.

It seems like it could be the skeleton of the tree behind it. It also shows how we should all fight for life and share our moments of beauty with others.

Good luck in the contest.

Keep writing

Always good to hear from you, Joan. Thank you very much for the review. The tree that appears to be behind the skeletal one in the photo is in fact a regrowth from the old tree. Best wishes, Tony

Lovely poem Tony, but don't write off the tree because it is old and decrepit. It might, one day, happen to us. Lovely descriptive write. I particularly like -

Its yearning limbs, on one wild night,
closed round a hunter's moon,
clasped its bulbous bloat,
in heartless mockery of life
but, rooted firm, could not take flight
like seas receding - tide untied -
for still its pendules stayed alive....... Beautiful personification of the tree - and I especially like 'yearning limbs'. Good luck with this winner of a poem. Dorothy

It never fails to amaze me the will to survive and how hardy trees and plants can be despite bad weather and lack of nourishment, such is the thirst for life, a poignant write, love Dolly x

A superb free verse poem and entry for the contest.
It's surprising how tenaciously a tree can hold on to life.
I've seen it many times. There was a six hundred year old elm
that recently died in New Jersey. That's what I call staying power.
It's that pulsing sap. Now, if only your could bottle it.
I think many will like your end lines. I do.
I hope you surprise for many years to come.
But it doesn't surprise me that you write wonderful poetry
Best wishes in the contest
RS
