Some of the things these people have to go through to escape the terrifying life they live is unbelievable, many don't make it, those that do are often subject to hostility in countries that don't always offer open arms.
A breath taking, emotional, heartfelt write Tony, very well done.

Ten thousand children from Syria...greeted with open arms in Europe disappeared into the arms of possible human slaveholders. No one knows where they are. What type of parents would send their children to such an uncertain life? What type of hosts would be so careless with babes?...It is the kids who suffer...
A compassionate poem...
The other side of the issue is now...Will they turn to ISIS in anger? And will they rise against the hosts who gave them shelter? For the attacks upon Europe are from those who were welcomed...2nd generation...The issues are not simple, but complex...
Your compassion, your words are beautiful...

Thank you so much for your detailed response to this one, Nika. Very much appreciated. There are, of course, two sides to this. However, when fear overcomes love, we are are beginning to drown. All the best, Tony

WoW! the breadth and scope of this Ode about the struggle faced by those seeking refuge from war-torn strife as refugees was stunning. It rippled with imagery and alliteration. I was messmerized. Held spellbound in the grip of your iambic pentameter within ababcdcd rhymed octaves. A touching and well rendered treatise.

It is just unfathomable to think how much trauma these children of the refugees who lost parents while traveling the sea to escape - how much they have suffered. Yet some will be able to overcome and others devastated depending on the strength of their spirits. I like your imagery in "tattered garment of your mind" and others but the giant squid simile was hard to relate to.

Thank you so much for your response to this one, Helen. Very much appreciated. i was uncertain about that particular metaphor, especially coming so hard on the heels of the snail! I shall be reviewing this poem and re-writing parts to tighten it. Your input confirms my suspicion that a wrong note was struck in this part! All the best, Tony

Dramatic, powerful, emotional and a story of the plight of the true refugee is well told Tony in this ode.
Will trust forever be displaced by doubt? unfortunately in our world today I think that's probably a yes from both sides of the question. Great read, well done.
cheers.

This poem really captures the refugee's plight, the sense of being cut off from home, of losing all your memories, of being in an uncertain place, in an uncertain time. very vivid imagery and heavy meter relate the feelings well. Maybe it could use an edit, tighten it up a bit, condense it and pack the intensity a little more estory

Many thanks for your kind review, estory, together with your suggestions. Much appreciated! I agree that this could do with some tightening and intend to go back and revise parts of it soon - particularly the rather odd metaphor of the giant squid and the overlong repetition at the end. Best wishes, Tony

To me, this well-scribed ode reads more like an intellectual lament. A liberal and ostentatious sprinkling of potent adjectives makes this poem stand apart in a traditional way. It presents a case that nobody can argue with, declaring a state of hopeless sorrow before questioning its readers for impossible solutions.

Strange how I had never come across trepid before (neither had the spell checker) only its opposite. This is beautiful. The iambic pentameters roll off the tongue like that fellow Shakespeare's, there was so much I found beautiful in this hideous tale, the alliterative susurrus of the second stanza and the lone trochaic line in the sixth that alerts us to a change of fortune.

A truly exceptional piece of work.
