Dogs and cats are the most noted species to be chosen as pets. I don't choose either. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read.

Thanks for reading and commenting. You are one of few with no animal friends. I say, to each his own choices in life.

I've had to live my life without animals for fear they would trip me. I was born with a bone disease that has left me cripple for life.

So sorry to hear about your incapacity. You are missing a lot by having to live without animals. I wish you the best always. Hugs.

Hi PBB
I liked your story.
I at one time had rescued eight cats and one dog
The cats and I lived in an apt my dog stayed with my mom
because I didn't have a house yet.
I introduced my dog and cats and they all got along great never any kind of disagreement at all between any of them.
Cats can be taught to do almost anything a dog can do.
The lady I worked with trained one of hers
to go over a jump retrieve an object,
jump back on over again.
Then place the object in her hand.
It was all done with rewards no punishments
Best regards,
K River

Thanks for reading and commenting, my friend. I have a dog too and the cats and she get along fine. The dog is quite protective of her cat friends.

Fantastic!!! How informative! Also amusing, the way you presented certain facts. I'm totally floored by this write up of yours. I hope you win the contest not because I too have a soft spot for cats but because I think you deserve to win.

Thank you for the great review and the six stars, they are appreciated. I love dogs as well as cats and have written a couple of dog stories also.

Well-written and researched piece. Fun write.

11.5% is too darn many in my book... lol

After a cat's death, it's body was mummified - its.

give them what they want then listen to their - than listen.

They snuggled up to the child and kept him warm at night, and brought him scraps of food. When the police found the boy, his cat guardians hissed at spat viciously at them.- they were obviously fattening him up for the kill, or to do their evil bidding. You are far too trusting, this is how cats operate. Devious little buggers...

Thank you for the amusing review. You're right, they might have been putting some meat on the child's bones for future purposes. LOL

I enjoyed reading this post. I've lived with a number of cats in my life, and have done some reading about them, but I didn't know that "Cats have 1000 times more data storage than an iPad,..." That's fascinating. Thank you for writing about this wonderful species without whom many of us would feel lost and alone. Best wishes -- Margaret

Thank you, my friend. I didn't know about the data part until I did some research on cats. Kind of scary isn't it?

I've got to remember to tell my husband about the "1000 times." He'll be freaked. M.

This is thoroughly entertaining and even allows the reader to learn some hitherto unknown facts about cats while being delighted. Your love of cats can't be denied, and your light-handed approach succeeded in making at least one dog owner/reader wonder if he could marry the dog's living space with a cat's. That's persuasion!

Here are some suggestions, observations and corrections. If you can incorporate them into your editing before the window closes for the contest, I think it might add some buff and polish in a few areas.

I panic when one of my precious felines is hurt or a bit off their feed. [A problem with agreement here. Since you are speaking of ONE cat you can't use THEIR feed. Instead, as I'm sure you know, you must use HIS/HER feed. This is a flaw in English Grammar, but until the rule is changed, we must abide by it.]

At least I don't shave off my eyebrows when one of my cats die as the ancient Egyptians did. [... when ONE of my cats DIES ...]

I do believe my felines remember all this ancient history because they never hesitate to remind me of their sacredness. [Good tie in between your cats and your treatment of the sacred Egyptian cats ... with a dollop of humor added.]

(Oh, no. I wouldn't have lasted long) [Punctuation needed inside the parentheses]

I can't imagine cleaning the litter box after an animal like that or having him land in my bed at night. [Doesn't it read better "ON" my bed? It may just be me, but "in" connotes under the covers (where they may sleep, as my Shi Tzu snuggles on cold winter nights). Just an observation, not even a suggestion.]

a cat's brain is 90% similar to a human's with nearly identical [I stumbled over this. You might try, "Ninety percent of a cat's brain is similar to a human's." ]

It's easier to give them what they want then listen to their pitiful wails. [... THAN listen to their pitiful wails.]

and pestered him until he woke up and called for help [No ending punctuation.]

The staff welcomed her as well as the patients. [Ambiguity. Did the staff also welcome the patients? You might try, "The staff, as well as the patients, welcomed her."]

It would be a significant improvement over the candidates presented to the voters in previous years and the present. [Oops! Though true, you might offend one of the judges. LOL--but really, it would be a shame if you led a reader blissfully to the end of this delightful essay only to offend him or her. You could soften the ending a bit (much as a politician would), by writing, "It MIGHT EVEN be a significant improvement over the candidates presented to the voters in previous years, and who knows, maybe even their present choice."]

Either way, I think the judges will be smitten by this. Hopefully, the corrections I pointed out might be incorporated before the voting starts. Good luck with the contest.

Cat lovers are special people and you certainly have the affection for felines that makes a person a cat lover. The information you provide about cats is very interesting, especially the construction of their brains. Thanks for all the interesting data about the felines.

Yes, I love cats & have many or should I say many have me! I enjoyed your story. I can easily tell you live with cats otherwise you could not write of all the 'things' cats do. I call all cats kitties no matter how old/young. I rally like the line about cats superiority over dogs. The art is perfect. As I write this, I 1 kitty sleeping on my nightstand & another on a table near my bed. That is after she walked on my computer and added a line of uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu & **********.

Thanks for sharing the facts about kitties, too. Best wishes in the contest. Jan

You have a great sense of humor, Lady.
Ex) cleaning a litter box after Smilidon..

I have to agree, :) :) I KNOW what my life would be like without cat hair! :) :)

Thanks for the history lesson. I had no idea the extent of 'cat worship' the Egyptians expressed. We all see the figures representative of the Pharaoh Era, but never knew they were protected by laws like the cattle in India.

Talk about the computer brain of a cat...my sister in law's cat actually talks. I know, I've heard her! But mayor of a town? Gotta question the brains of the owner.

Fun story!

Thanks for reading and your input. Cats are unique animals and much smarter than most realize. I have a cat that talks to me too.

There is more to cats th(e)n most realize.

Loved the para below - those felines are too clever for words:

Cats can make more than a hundred different sounds and can change their meow to manipulate humans. My cats imitate a baby when they want treats or food, especially if I tell them no. It's easier to give them what they want th(e)n listen to their pitiful wails.

I notice you often use "then" in place of "than". I don't know if that is something you do deliberately.

But thanks for an enjoyable read, my friend.

Apky

Thank you. No, I don't do it deliberately. I have Grammarly on my computer and I think it is wrong a lot of the time. I'm going to have to pay closer attention.
