What a lovely, warm story about meeting a Mexican who had grown up in the US, and her family who taught you to respect other cultures and customs. Yes my daughter is married to and Indonesian guy, and my wife and I have learnt about other people and cultures and people by traveling the world, I adore my granddaughter Indah and grandson Dion, from this mixed marriage, well done, I loved this biographical account, blessings, Roy

Thank you for reading and commenting. One of my older sisters married an Indonesian man too. He immigrated to the United States when he was a young man. My sister met him at a square dance.

What a lovely story. We can all learn something from other cultures, it opens the mind to different ideas which can only be a good thing. I really enjoyed your story. Good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

As I recall, it was a hot day with fat, fluffy clouds that hung motionless in the air, like white, cream filled cats asleep on a carpet of blue.

Great poetic phrasing. This is an excellent contest entry.

Thank you. I like to slip stuff like that into my stories when I can. I think it makes a story more real and interesting. Thanks for taking the time to read.

I like this story as a reminder of a migrant workers in all nations, the are not a part of the permanent community so they are often suspected and looked down upon. It is only the innocent views of children that make a difference, if only the did not become jaded with age.
I am glad you liked Marge, her making the approach to the child of the farmer could have had a much different result. Rick

Thanks for reading and commenting. I never disliked the Mexicans, It was difficult to understand most of the Mexicans so I never tried to get to know any of them.

I did not mean to impinge upon your character, i was speaking in generality about how too many view the relationship between seasonal farm workers and owners. Rick

It's wonderful to look back on that friendship
in your childhood days - and what matter
that cultures were different? - I think the younger
you are the more easily one adapts to each other.

My youngest son had a little German friend, who
couldn't speak English, and yet he and my son
seemed to understand each other perfectly.
It warms my heart to see cultures missing without
prejudice.

With eleven siblings(,) a little quiet wasn't easy to find.

I enjoyed your story - good luck with the contest, my friend.

Margaret

thank you for sharing your story of learning about another culture through a friendship that lasted for years. I'm glad you were able to overcome your stand-offishness in order to know and love this wonderful family. I'm sure they have fond memories of you, too.

Maybe the world would be less hostile if we befriended other cultures. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. I have nothing against other races. We are who we are as a result of birth, but we are all people with feelings and dreams.

"With eleven siblings a little quiet wasn't easy to find."

- As an only child I envy you that; I always felt too alone growing up.

"I do speak Spanish too, but I was born and raised in Erie, Michigan. However, my mom and dad migrated from Mexico. My mother can't speak English at all, and dad knows just enough to get by in this country. He works in a glass factory and decided to spend his vacations picking fruit to make extra money. Someone told us your dad was a good man to work for, so here we are."

- Wow, for a little girl with nglish as sort of second language, this was all but perfect English. Kudos to your friend.

So glad you connected again.

Thanks for a marvellous read here.

Best for the contest,
Apky

Thanks for reading. Marge was born and raised here in America. English was the first language she learned because her parents insisted their children learn English first, Spanish later.
