What a marvellous ancestral story, Australia has a large amount of Italian, descendants of Italian market Gardeners, they were relatively uneducated, but very industrious, and their children were well educated, becoming Lawyers, Doctors, professional people, they were called dagos, wops Iti's etc. not anymore, so your great great grandparents, did well there, as they did well here. Well done, good writing, Patty, blessings, Roy

Hi Roy; thank you so much for reading and reviewing. Its amazing to me all of the places that Italian immigrants ended up. Thank you for sharing the Australian history. They were hard workers, and willing to do whatever it took to be successful.

Patty,
This is an amazing retelling of your ancestry that you should be proud of to tell. I enjoyed it very much. I love history & this was great with awesome details of a personal kind. Thanks for sharing.

Questions:

You say 1903 in 1st paragraph. Then, 1904 in 4th paragraph.

Just asking about the dates. I may be confused. Good job & thanks for sharing. Jan

Hi Jan - thanks for catching that! The 1904 was a typo. I appreciate your warm words of encouragement. I find familial history fascinating. I was able to find the page Nonna and Nonna signed as they passed through Ellis Island on ancestry.com. I also found a copy of the census page in 1910 when they were living in Metuchen. Those were great finds - and an important piece of my history.

Thank you so much, Patty, for letting me (us) into this amazing history of your great grandparents and your own. My great grandparents migrated (one Scottish, the other English from Yorkshire) just before WW1 to the then British East Africa (now Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) My grandparents were therefore Kenyans (like a lot of the British aristocracy that migrated to Africa) and we have a huge family branch there too.

>>ginneys, wops, and degos, << I tried to look these up in OED but couldn't find them.

BTW I love Italian - to listen to or in pop songs of Ramazzotti or Gianna Nannini!

Hi apky; ginneys, wops, and degos are all racial slurs for the migrating Italians. The words are now politically incorrect, but I remember them being used in the 60s and 70s on the east coast. Thank you so much for reading this history and for giving me some of your own. We are lucky to have such rich histories,

You have eloquently told an important part of your family's history. These stories seem from another time as people become assimilated into their new lives, but the reality is that this is a very recent and very important history. The blend of Italian and English make the story come alive. Thanks for sharing.

This is a lovely tribute to your great grandparents. How young they were to make a new and successful life in a new country. I admire the straight forward way you told their tale of courage.

An amazing story about your great grandparents and their building of a life in the United States. It's good you were able to get so many stories from your grandmother. It's important to learn family history, and older family members are a wonderful way to gain this information.

Take care,
Rhonda
