I loved your story, the faith your mother had in you even though you didn't see it. She knew, she knew you would one day hatch out and awaken from your slumber and embrace the gift you were giving at birth. I was 44, 44 before I sat down and expressed myself through my poetry. I love it too friend,,, love it !

I loved your story, the faith your mother had in you even though you didn't see it. I can relate to your regret about your mom not living to enjoy the talents she knew were dormant.

This is such a great story - it induces quite a sense of emotion on the part of the reader (well, this reader at least), and yet it avoids a saccharine-sweet display of it, as evidenced by the simplicity of the following line:
"She then gave me a gift subscription to Poets & Writers and died."
The haiku at the end fits perfectly.

Your are truly blessed to have had such a mother Andre.
This one brought tears. I have a son who I was sure would be the next Hemingway - he wrote with such depth and feeling as a teenager, but alas, he has not found that calling... ..yet. He is now 53 and has 8 children of his own so he does have other priorities. haha
I loved the story of your mother and the haiku is truly inspired and perfect for your story.
I'm sure your mother is looking down with joy and pride in her beloved son.
