How'd I miss this? Wonderful work, dear Dean.

Love the closing note. Pitch perfect. Love the rich phonetics, especially all the L, W, and S sounds and soft C in ancient as well as subtle consonance of R, M and T.

Beautiful insight. Beautiful imagery, beautiful tone and tenor. Outstanding word economy. Beautiful presentation.

A six.

Warmly, rd

Thanks so much for reading this, rd. I deeply appreciate your stellar review and comments.
You most likely missed it because it wasn't very highly promoted; just one point and .27 cents, I think, was all I was able to get this tanka up to at the time of its posting.
Still, better late than never, right?
On a side note, it has been selected by the Tanka Society of America for publication in their year-end anthology, so I'm very excited about that, and quite honored, too!
    Thanks so much again.

Wow.... this tanka is stunning... I read it a couple of days ago but I waited because I didn't have sixes and this is six worthy.

I love everything about it, from the fine form to the awesome presentation. Good job, my friend,

Gypsy

Wow Dean, this is a great Tanka and thank you for the extensive notes that put the whole thing into perspective. Amazing.
Our cherry trees are at the hight of their blossom. The whole valley is ablaze with them. Brings your poem into another kind of understanding. All the best. Ulla:))

One of my favorite places to be is in Washington DC when they cherry blossoms are in bloom on Tidal Basin. Your poem puts an entirely new meaning to those gorgeous flowers. Once again your talent shines through.

Beautifully worded and not an axe in sight. The history lesson in the notes is much appreciated I thought they were all called Kamikaze (divine wind) I did not realize that there were special aircraft called Oka. The theme is cohesive, the syllable count correct, no gerunds running rampant through the piece and the juxtaposition of the blossoms and the warriors is lovely. If the pivot line were stronger, I'd a given it a six. rosehill (Wendy)

This has exceptional imagery in and wisdom too. I like the Japanese reference to sacred solemn oaths.

My last six.

This is quite a devastating weapon the Japanese invented. The Tanka about the cherry blossoms speaks to the beauty of life and brevity here on earth as is the brevity of the blossom on the tree. Similarly, the Ohka plane has brevity as well, one flight to do its job.
The last two lines of your Tanka emphasize the dedication the Japanese had to their cause during their war. A one-way, suicide bomber, must be a dedicated warrior. An excellent Tanka

Very well done, Dean. I had thought the Kamikaze occurred at the very end of the war as a last resort, but I never heard of the glider aircraft being used like this.
