Love this free verse Tony about the Piping Shrike, and you're right up here they just know them as Maggies, but their songs are just as melodious. Nicely done,
cheers,
valda

Thank you for your author's notes. As I read, I had decided I had never heard of this bird. We do have many beautiful song birds in the US. I always enjoy reading your poems. You're one of my favorites.

Thanks for reviewing A Pair of Piping Shrikes, Barbara. I think that they are peculiar to Australia, rather larger than the European and American magpies and more closely related to the crow family. Much appreciated.Tony

Very well done and I thank you for your notes. I would've been lost without them since I'm not familiar with this bird. Appearances are deceiving such as the 'Song of the Sirens' set for the kill.

A beautiful description of a birds voice, I feel (ashamed now) I did not know the real name for Maggies but your wonderful words and a very well set out poem kept me until the end( being an Aussie) should have known before via your photo****kahpot

Living in Australia now, your poem meant so much to me. Yes, they seem to be called magpies and they have the most beautiful song. You painted a great picture of these birds and the way they behave. Have you ever watched a mother magpie and baby? The baby nags and nags at her for food constantly until she seems like a veritable slave delivering worms. Susan

We have magpies in our neighborhood but I never knew them by any other name.
Thank you for your notes that painted a more complete picture of this interesting and welcome bird.
I enjoyed reading this excellent poem with lively alliteration.
Well done
Blessings

-Very nice photo and poem, Tony.
-Author notes appreciated.
-You use good description to tell about these birds.
-They serenade you as you work, but as with
any bird, they are going to be looking out for their young,
as you write so well in the last two stanzas.

You paint a great picture of these birds and contrast their beauty, the beauty of their song, with their primordial instinct to feed and defend their young. We have to have respect for their ability and instinct to do that. Often we get caught up in the marvel of the beauty of the creatures without realizing form follows function. You place it all in your poem estory

Magpies are such an industrious and clever bird. I have them in my garden and I'm fascinated by their antics. You have captured the behaviour of the 'Piping Shrikes' brilliantly especially when they have young.
Have a great day

I don't think that the Australian magpie is any relation of the British one. It is more like a rook or crow, but with pied colouring. Nonetheless, there are a few similarities.

An excellent poem. You have a lot to say and a beautiful way of saying it. Your writing style is excellent. I read whatever you post.
