Hi Patty,
Good little dog tale.
You might get a couple of Kongs
Don't feed them before you leave
Put their food in separate kongs one won't work they might fight over it. Do it first with supervision for practice. Roll the kongs in two different distant places
then let them work for their food.
It will eventually tire them out they fall asleep then you show up.
BUT always do it in baby steps. You've conditioned them that if they bark you or your husband appear the reward is either of YOU, or they get some other reward a pat, a treat, a walk etc. Your rewarding the barking behavior all the time you just don't realize it. Roll the kongs then
Leave for only a few maybe even seconds or min right out side the door short period where they are quite. You don't show up unless they are quite. Then very ssssssssssssslloowly extend the time. When they are quite you suddenly appear you don't enter unless they are quite. enter when they pause if they start again you leave. Interrupt the bad behavior and give them something positive that they can be rewarded for. A trainer can help you eliminate this problem. It is just a matter of training both of you. That is the hard part training the dogs is easy.
If they bark you disappear along with all the treats. The idea is to get them to associate quite with you appearing.
Best regards,
K River

Thank you for the training tips. I will work with the boys. They have kongs in several sizes and they love them. I just never thought of them as training items.

Patty do it slow in very small steps.
Always successful if it isn't working backup to a place where it was and start there. Break things down to smallest part. Training is a slow process of building a training wall.
Each brick is a behavior. The mortar are the treats. Each behavior builds on the next and must be well set in order to build a strong wall.
    Best regards,

You might have enjoyed the break Patty but your two darlings have been griping here on Fanstory about your nasty treatment of them. Podge and Rodge send their sympathies lol

hugs

thank you for stopping by to read and review. The dogs are still recuperating from their time in 'jail,' and have spent most of the day in bed under the covers. Your generous review was welcomed by all,

This work has reached the exceptional level

This was a well written short story. It had a nice little plot and nice dialog and it was just well thought out and cute. But it also made you think heart breaking thoughts at first.
Great Story!

The boys were allowed to stay all weekend at a kennel, it was essential on several domestic reason of the couple, interesting, the theme developed thru plot progression in the setting, I enjoyed easy said, flown thoughts in a realistic diction and expression.

Slick imagination for a true doggy person. I loved this and could totally feel with poor Howie who in turn seemed so tuned into Bernie and Bernie's disposition.
Brilliant!

My husband and I own our own business in town. So we are not gone more than five hours a t a time. Also, we originally bought a smaller RV for vacations so the dogs could go with us. When I had cats we could leave them with my neighbor watching. Dogs are our babies. Since we are moving in the RV we upgraded to a bigger one.

I have a barker/ whiner. Brutus.
Rocky is quiet until Brutus barks. Rocky is also a bit klutzy like me. So sometimes I call them Whiner and Tangles. I tell my husband a new cope show, Whiner and Tangles. LOL.

Howie couldn't believe the Mistress had left (-he) (+him) and Bernie in this jail.

"Let's go home(+,) boys."

I love your stories in your dog's POV.
hugs Heidi

Our dogs hated the trips to the groomers. Talk about anxiety attacks.
It was really traumatic for them every time. This is a cute rendition of what a dog might be going through when they are separated from their owner over night. Well done Patty. Nancy

Awww what sweet babies! You described the doggy view so well, I could see through their eyes. The mistress tapping, the leashes/harnesses, the jail cell grid. I felt their excitement when the mistress returned. Nicely done. I enjoyed seeing through a dog's eyes. Oh and enjoyed the relationship between the two dogs. Like siblings!

One small typo, I think, this line:

...Mistress had left he and Bernie in this jail.

I think "him" rather than "he"?

Enjoyed! Thank you. :)

I like Howie's perspective on viewing the vet's kennel as jail. I know it really affects dogs if their routine is broken and the are forced to be separated from their humans. Mine doesn't eat at all while we're away. She's such a part of the family that it's upsetting leaving her even for a day or two.

Your post is right on point and delivered well.
