Really, they can put a person on medications for those disorders in a Alcohol-Drug Rehabilitation House? Oh my goodness, run for the door Gary. Get a second opinion. That is so scary. Good narrative storytelling and dialogue. Great work. Keep it up.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. Some of the rehab centers that are run by doctors would have the authority to diagnose and treat mental disorders. All too often, there isn't any testing done, and the addict isn't treated as a 'whole' person. I appreciate your comments and concern for Gary.

Hi, Patty. This really is written very well. It is easy to follow the rehab system and Gary's time intherapy anf "group" I've been there done that ...way back in the 80's. I was one of the lucky ones...it worked and I never went back to my old habits.
If this is a true story (which I assume it is) you should be listing it as Non-fiction biographical instead of fiction.
Great job all the way. Sounds like gary has other problems ahead. Life can be tough, eh, Patty?

Hi Bob; Thank you for your time to read and review. Believe it or not - this IS fiction. It IS my hopes and dreams for my son who battles addiction. I've been reading a lot of books about rehab so it can have an authentic feel.
Your kind words encourage me to keep going. I 'rented' a copy of the DSM5 (the Bible of Mental Illness) to ensure I describe his afflictions correctly.

I only have experience with Over Eater's Anonymous and the 12 steps, so I've been worried the story wouldn't have an authentic feel to it. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your words of encouragement!

I really liked these sentences: No, the detox process proved to him he was hooked through the bag. The phone wasn't a lifeline like he always thought -- instead it was a tether to a life he didn't miss.
I have a creative criticism: There were the ones who considered themselves tough, those that were more sensitive, and those that simply wanted each day to pass as quickly as possible (maybe you could include your character and where he is in this).

A very moving story that I can relate to, my sister in law went through many re-habs. Alas, she succumbed to her self inflicted disease. I do hope Gary has better luck.

I have worked as an inpatient rehab counselor and I currently teach first time offenders drunk driving course. Your story is one I can relate to, many of my DUI clients have these duel diagnoses. Excellent flow of story where the reader feels like she is there with the client. I look forward to reading more from you.

This is a well written chapter and hit home with me because I have two grandsons going to to rehab today. One for drug addiction and other alcohol addiction. I know that mental illness often runs parallel to addiction, but it is treatable today. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for reading and the thoughtful review, Debbie. Gary's story will go on as I continue to pray for my own son's recovery from this disease. (He hasn't found a rehab facility yet - but I have hope something will happen soon.)
