You hit the nail on the head, Patricia. Until one lives alone, they do not know just how lonely one can be. Particularly if someone has, for the good part of their life, lived in a full household, to suddenly find themselves alone can be very depressing.
Death of a beloved partner or divorce can suddenly change a person's life completely. Those you reach out to these people really can make a huge difference, as everyone needs to feel loved and to feel needed.

Patricia, there is much food for thought in this poem, particularly regarding your reference to social media. You are correct, is there really socialization taking place in social media?
People who live alone are not always lonely. I know many people who live alone who are very sociable and constantly have social gatherings at their homes. However, I understand that people can be surrounded by hundreds of people and still feel alone. There is a difference between loneliness and aloneness.
I agree that we must reach out to people because depression can be deadly.
