a tin box slung behind - his carapace - great line. Love the creative use of 'carapace'.

Hello Tony,

It's been ages! A six just for the poem. It reeked of Victorian (Arnold-esque) majesty and grandeur.

How proud you must be of Anna. You've given the voiceless little one a compelling voice in your write.

It's not often that non-fiction grips. Like father, like daughter ... (or vice versa?? :))

Love the profile pic.

You start this very interesting and informative write with a lovely Sonnet Tony, emotional. I particularly like the idea of the lone toucan that flies between the spirit world and man - and keeps the informals safe, if they're lucky. Great read, enjoyed.
cheers,
valda

WOW you have so much writing talent. This work is superb and I love the start with the poem moving on to the tragedy of little children working for cents and the appalling job situation. Amazing as I have come to expect from you Tony. Get your work out there because I would pay to read any one of your books, you have genuine skill an it is reflected here effectively. Well done and kindest regards, Meia x

Very many thanks for your lovely comments, Meia. I have had a couple of books of poems published by a local Adelaide publishing house, but I haven't tried publishing prose. Best wishes, Tony

I recognized that Petrarchan Sonnet immediately, it is an incredible introduction to your amazing follow-on story about the shoeshine boy, as well as your daughter's project. Overall an exceptional piece, actually deserving of three seperate sixes. Bravo.

Very many thanks indeed, Tom. Glad you enjoyed bot the sonnet and the story behind it. I thought I'd published the sonnet here on FS a while ago, but couldn't find it in my portfolio, so guess I didn't. I appreciate the six stars. Most generous! Best wishes, Tony.

You should be proud of Anna and the outstanding work she did, Tony. Even though Ernesto wasn't part of your journey, it's tales like this that brings the area to life. Travelogues can go on and on about the sights and touristy places to visit, but it's stories like Ernesto's that make a reader remember the city or country. Exceptional poem and enjoyable, memorable story.
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

Again, thanks for your very kind words, Karyn. Yes - I'd have to say that I'm just a little bit proud of my dear daughter! Does it show? LOL

First of all, the poem starting your piece is outstanding, Tony. I loved reading about Anna and the boy, Ernesto, who was a man already at such a young age as most kids are in these countries. When my sister took the same trip as you did, she also felt Guatemala was a special spot. Your entire post is well written and interesting. Marilyn

Greetings Tony;
-what an enjoyable and entertaining read and I especially enjoyed the Petrarca and sonnet written professionally and technically perfect in all respects to iambic pentameter and the rhyming scheme of ABBAABBA and DEFDEF.
-The social structure and especially the economical structure of this area or country is astoundingly poor and what is really astounding of it all is the fact that these people don't feel themselves poor. Themselves being poor as being hungry even though financially they can feel the burden.
-I enjoyed the accompanying pictures by Anna Fawcus that were very relative and appropriate for this essay or short story.
-You did an excellent job with the vivid descriptiveness and definitive expressiveness of the shoeshine boy, Ernesto, who had a tin box slung over his shoulder and other accompanying accoutrements to help them shine shoes for 2 quetzels a day where he normally makes about 10 quetzals on a good day which is about three dollars US money. This is probably relative to the monetary situation in this country or area were probably a loaf of bread is 1/3 of a quetzel or whatever that denomination would be. This is just a hypothetical guess.
-Thank you for a very entertaining read, Tony, and take care and have a good one.

Many thanks for your six stars here, Alex. As always, very much appreciated! You are right about the cost of living being quite a bit lower in Guatemala. Still quite a struggle for the poorer people - as it is in most countries. Best wishes, Tony.

I am also proud of her. The different thoughts of the same questions brings eye openers to the ones being asked the same question but very graphic differences appear. Your piece is magnificiently written as you take us places that we don't even know about

You promised and you have certainly delivered. Tony, you are at your best with people when you are writing in prose. They all come alive under the influence of your pen, or keyboard or whatever. Your poetry on the other hand serves you brilliantly when describing scenes. I am not talking solely about the octave in your petrarchan sonnet here either.

Don't misunderstand me, I am not slating your descriptive prose but I can find that sort of thing in the Rough Guide to Wherever, but I won't find Ernesto's story in there.

Hi there,

A fine digression indeed but still within the vein of the piece. It is easy to forget in our privileged world what real trials and tribulations actually are.

Another well written piece.

Many thanks for your review of Part 10, Gman. It's good to travel occasionally, to be reminded, though I always feel a bit uncomfortable being a tourist in such places.
