LOL Sounds like YOU need to be writing for the Lonely Planet Tony...it would certainly be informative and refreshing. I love your writing. Concise, witty and you don't spare a syllable. Your travel logue, starting with an unaplogetic view from your hotel balcony is cohesive and well balanced and I loved the honesty about everything you see around you. It sounds like you are settling in nicely in your Ancient civilization Tony. I giggled at the third world references but only due to the tri-reference haha
You so clever...I can see I'm going to enjoy your Yuccy tale haha

Thanks, P., for what I might have called a 'super' review in my English days. Bonzer, mate!

Another well-paced, well penned and spag-free chapter.

The details in this chapter enliven the read and hold my attention. Well done., I especially liked these two sentences:

Planeloads of tourists are flown in, stripped of their assets, and sent home again, suntanned, with sand in their suitcases, often all in just the space of a single weekend.

and

Tulum, the 'city of discovery' or the 'city of the dawn', must, in its time, have been a haven for the Toltec priests -- a sort of medieval precursor to Club Med.

Lots of fine poetic devices make your prose sound lyrical in places. Bravo.

Warmly, rd

Planeloads of tourists are flown in, stripped of their assets and sent home - good description of a tourism hotspot, just what the retailers want. Love the photo of the iguana shading under the rock. Your words introduce us to the beauty of the area Tony, nicely done.
cheers,
valda

Glad you enjoyed the iguana. I was going to use a picture of the upside down god, with the sun setting behind him, but I couldn't find it. Maybe my camera didn't like shooting into the sun!

Your descriptions add to the imagery of the area, Tony. We visited Cancun via a cruise, but we didn't stay there. I liked the quote from The Lonely Planet, but your additions were even better. I hope to read more about Tulum.
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

Sorry I've taken so long to get to your review of Part 2. I've been a bit overwhelmed in this first week of the ratings! Thank you for it anyway! Tony

A good retelling of your experiences and frustrations with the Yucatan Peninsula, Tony. I loved the picture of the iguana escaping from the heat of the sun - or perhaps he is just a bit camera shy. Is this a recent trip - or is this something from the past? You say it is a turn of the century travelogue - something from late 1990 or early 2000's?

Anyway - it sounds like an adventure. I'm not sure from your writing if you are frustrated or mildly amused with the adventure so far.

Thanks for your review of Part 2, Rose. You are right. This was a trip taken in 1999. I recently unearthed a travel journal I kept and thought I'd play around a bit and see if I could make anything of it. Interesting recollections for me. Delighted that you are enjoying them too. Best wishes, Tony

I always think Mexico is such an interesting place to visit, Tony. You certainly were intrepid young travellers going off to such an exotic place for adventure.
A minor detail for me is that I'm struggling with the size of the writing. Old eyes fading fast I guess. Giddy

I'm way behind with answering reviews, Giddy, but I think that I've fixed this now.

A shortish instalment, this one, with perhaps proportionally fewer chuckles than Part 1.

Your description in the first two paragraphs is still vivid, but I have to say this didn't really capture my interest as the previous part did. Perhaps I was expecting more detail of the ruins at Tulum. You say Lonely Planet didn't do it justice - I'm not sure that you did either.

disports?? in para 1

Thanks for reading and commenting, Steve! Also for picking up the spelling mistake. You are right that Tulum deserved better. Although comparitively small, it was one of the more interesting sites we visited. Best wishes, Tony

Your descriptions are wonderful! I enjoyed your "third" joke as you started about the third of the cars and the third of the ads and suddenly you spring the "third world." I would love to see iguanas sunning themselves! Thanks for the picture and the chuckle about the "descending god" description.

There is so much to see right here in our own hemisphere, sometimes I ask, why does anyone look further? There is a vast undiscovered world right outside our door.

Thanks for reading and commenting! You are right - we often ignore what is closest to us in our search for the exotic. Best wishes, Tony

This work has reached the exceptional level

Happy new year again to you, Tony;
-bright and witty With exceptional clarity and the imagery of describing Yucatán geography and behavior of the culture during the medieval times, so to speak, and how well you vividly described demonstratively and definitively expressed the nature of your travels.
-Even your humerus quip of the economical structuring of all the hotels in the area were would be somewhat like a realtor's heaven with all the different types of hotels and motels.
-Even your humerus outlook on the renting of their Dodge Ram By mentioning it was a "great beast of a thing". Found that you rambled down the highway singing "Dixie" of the southern coast. All of this really reflected on how well you immensely described expressively of your voyage and the nature of your travels.
-You made it sound like I was there traveling with you which is great piece of writing I'm looking forward to your next installment.
-Thanks for sharing this, Tony, and take care and have a good one.

Thanks for your review of Part 2, Alex. I very much appreciated your kind words and six stars! Sorry about the delay in responding. I've been overwhelmed with reviews because of this silly race to put up six posts! What an idiot I am to have thought it worthwhile! LOL

I understand the hectic race that can be overwhelming during the first six postings of everything. It's like the buzzing bees that are disturbed and are flying after the one who disturbed them until finally they come down to us could take weeks for some. You're very welcome Tony and take care.
