Hi Maria. I read an update on this woman fairly recently (November 2016). Her name is Sharbat Gula. You can read about her on-line. She was trying to immigrate into Pakistan. She was 12 at the time of the photo in 1985. This is a well written and rhymed poem. Marilyn

I've read quite a bit about her as I find the story and the picture fascinating.
    Thanks for reading.

Yes, I remember this picture of the jade-eyed Afghan woman, Sharbat Gula, whose picture travelled the world while she remained in a Pakistan refugee camp. I like your musings from her point of view about her stolen soul:

"My photograph has been everywhere
But I have stayed at home.
My heart is forever bare
To be found in any tome."

Thank you for sharing a caring. The National Geographic later found her, paid for her family's medical care, and paid for their strip to Mecca. An Afghan Children's Fund was established to help children in war torn Afghanistan.

And her daughters were sent to school as well.
The second picture, taken when the photographer found her, was quite surprising. She was in her late twenties or early thirties (she didn't know her age) but looked much older. Didn't have an easy life, I guess.
    Thanks for reading.

Hi Maria is this someone that's famous? This is a lovely modulated poem, Maria, very nicely written in abab rhyme, in a varied meter, but it reads well, dear girl, well done. Blessings, Roy

Yes, it's an Afghan girl that was photographed many years ago when she was twelve. Her picture appeared in National Geographic and they say it's one of the most famous in the world. Years later the photographer went back to Afghanistan to look for her and eventually found her. Now National Geographic pays her and she's been able to send her daughters to school.
Her name is Sharbat Gula in case you want to Google her.
    Thanks for reading.

This is an interesting poem about this most well known photo and I like where you've gone with your verses Maria, particularly in the final verse -
My photograph has been everywhere but I have stayed at home
very poignant. Well done with this one.
cheers,
valda

A very well-written poem. The eyes are the window to our souls. We can read a lot in someone's eyes. This girl know pain and loss more than anything else in her short life.

This was a famous picture of an Afghani girl at 12 years old it made the front cover of national geographic years ago. not long ago probably 13 years after the shot was taken the photographer went on a trek to find her again he was shocked to hear she had suffered so much hardship.

I know. But at least now National Geographic pays her and she's been able to send her daughters to school.
    Thanks for reading.
