If had to pick any other time to live, I would probably be a pioneer in the mid-1800s. I love the simplicity of what it means to work hard with your hands - to eat and survive. Thanks for writing a poem that reminds me of this. Congratulations on winning the contest.

I have always yearned to be a pioneer, but don't have the kills to survive. These were brave people who learned on the journey what to do (e.g.--how to drive a mule team, how to ford a river with a wagon). Many thanks for sharing my poem and the congrats. Rod

Not one of us don't have big dreams (doesn't)

I haven't seen this prompt before, but it has led to a very good poem, my friend. Best wishes in the contest~Debbie

Thank you for sharing my poem and your best wishes. The Speaker or persona in the poem is a typical pioneer, barely literate and unschooled in speaking proper English.

I think the prompt should be that the poem starts and ends with the same line, but altering the meaning of the ending line, satori flavor. Just my notion, not the prompt here. I also think those pioneers could have been nicer to the bison and the people who owned the land they took, but not enough to go sit in the snow by a pipeline.
The vernacular and the rhymes are excellent, by the way.

A nice subdued write, in a positive sense. Reminds me of a sundown in the wild west when all things come to calm for a while, when we come to gather thoughts and deed, usually to do with life and choices.
Wishing you good luck in the competition.
My best wishes.

This is very nicely done. I think I reviewed this once already because I recognize it and the lovely Bierstadt painting. Still worth another review of this charming poem. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn. You reviewed another poem titled "Bierstadt's Vision." Thanks for stopping by and for your nice comments about this one.

Well this certainly was a nicely composed poem as was the other one. When it comes to art, I always remember. Much luck in the contest with this fine entry. Marilyn

Thank you so much for your author's notes Being from Australia I don't know much about American history except through song such as the Eagles THE LAST RESORT Great accompanying image that compliments your words perfectly. Those old pioneers and settlers were a hardy bunch hey

I really appreciate your sharing my poem and your wonderful feedback. I am told that the original settlers of your Outback were not unlike American pioneers.

yeah I suppose you can draw comparisons Our country was only settled by "white man" since 1788, the aborigines resided here for thousands of years before

Beautiful artwork and poem about the Pioneer days and heading to Oregon. I had the pleasure of seeing Oregon a couple years ago. Lovely state and mountains there.

Thank you for your kind praise. Indeed most of the pioneers were not disappointed once they reached what was then called the Oregon Territory which included the present state of Washington.

You've not only managed to meet the moderator's specific requests for this particular contest to bookend a poem using the same word, you have also composed a wonderfully rhymed poem about our nation's pioneering spirit of yesteryear.
Much the same sort of spirit still exists today yet instead of west, we're more interested in the cold unknown outer reaches of our universe, and the worlds which lie beyond.
Nicely done.

Thank you, Dean, for your kind praise. Indeed, the pioneer spirit lives on in the current generation which looks forward to emulating all those aboard the Star Trek Enterprise.

Written in the style of speech of those early settlers, at least I imagine that is what you are emulating here, this poem captures the pioneering spirit and dreams of those early years. Given that this deals with events occurring as recently as two hundred years ago it is I think understandable that the American psyche is somewhat different from the British who have enjoyed (if that is the right term) an established order that has existed for somewhat longer. We gave up exploring our own land and instead went out and explored the world, trying to turn its civilizations into carbon copies of our own.

The reslt is that you lot got scalped by Native Americans and we got scalped by the rest of the World -- well almost.

This simple yet effective poem helped me to uderstand a little bit better what you folk are about.
