You have expertly taken the reader into the mind of Gary . Through his thoughts the story unravels and his thoughts about his mother finally makes him take the first right step.
addiction is terrible .It is difficult to watch people live thro it.

It's sad but very well written. I lost my brother to drugs. Once he cleaned up, his body gave up. I'm sorry to hear your son is still on the streets. It's hard...for the families most of all. Beautifully sad. I miss my brother every day.

Good morning, Patty

Enjoyed the post. You really placed the reader not only in the diner but within Gary's mind. You could see was a tormented soul, readily admitting he was hooked on meth. Loved his logic, his POV regarding his life and life in general.

Observations:
You used the word comforting twice. The old-fashioned diner was comforting in its simplicity. The comforting (reassuring, soothing?)

so he banished those (thoughts). But they were quickly replaced by a dark (thought.)

The last observation: the latter part of the post was telling, maybe if Gary expressed his feelings in thoughts?

Take care and stay safe,

Ray

    Hi, Ray,

Thank you so much for the lovely review. I will go back and do another edit. (I did rework it from the first time I posted it back in 2016, but I can see what you are talking about.

Hi Patty
A heart wrenching story that took us on an emotional journey, the pain and heartache shout loud from the lines, but there is always hope......

Really well written and I'm so sorry about your son. It has to be a parents worst nightmare to know your child is on drugs and living on the streets. I'll pray that he makes that hard decision to get clean and come home. Rox

    Hi, Rox,

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers for Gregory. I continue to pray and I take his calls and listen to him. He rarely tells me much of what is going on, but he does check in periodically and he called me for my birthday. It is a nightmare to live through this and something I never, ever thought would happen to one of my kids.

Your award of the sixth star touches my heart more than you know,

I figured this was about you son Patty, the fact that you were able Look through your son's eyes and write anyway is a tribute to your courage, but like you, his reasons for drugging, ate the same when I drank, it numbs the pain. That's what needs addressing, the drugs are secondary. Well done, kudos for courage. Well done, blessings, Roy

this writing is so smooth and compelling. your descriptions of the inner-thoughts of a junkie are spot on. could be anyone of the people trying to get help I met in Rehab. I know it has to be tough to write so personally, but you are tough. thank you for a good read, Patty.................meeshu

Sounds like time for a repost to me. Time for renewed prayers from all of your friends at FanStory. If your son only knew how much you understood and what you would do to help.
I went to a high school reunion a few weeks ago, and I was shocked to see how many of my classmates were watching their grandchildren because their children were either incapable of watching them due to addiction or jail. Simply shocked.
Saying a little prayer for your son tonight. May God give him strength.

Thanks for posting this again. I missed it the first time around. You did a terrific job with this and it is on a subject I can personally relate to. I was hooked on crack many years ago and woke one day realizing if I didn't quit it was going to kill me. I quit and haven't touched the deadly stuff again. My heart and prayers go out to you and your son and pray that one day he will do the same.

This is very well-written! I have nothing to say to improve it. Your description of the cafe, the man, and the waitress are all well-done and very believable. The story leaves the reader full of hope that the man gets the help he needed, so I was sorry to read your Author's Note that this was not just fiction and that your son is still living on the streets of Minneapolis. I hope your writing is a good stress-reliever and I will say a prayer for your son. God Bless you both!
