Well-written and informative post, Brett. Good to know for cat owners, or anyone working in the animal industry.
In response to your question, I would have to answer 'no' as well. Anyone who decides to own a pet takes on the responsibility of taking care of that animal, no matter the circumstances. That would include making tough decisions concerning ill animals, and I think the only responsible actions would be 1) Deal with the pet's illness and take whatever precautions are needed around it 2) Re-home the pet to someone who is willing to care for it, or 3) Humanely euthanize the pet, which is a better option than leaving it to fend for itself.
That's my opinion on the subject, anyway :)
Thanks for posting, and have a great day!

Interesting and informative. I have been a cat-owner for most of my life, and was aware of feline leukemia, but not feline AIDS. If it is as common as your article says (2% of all cats are infected), then it is a very important thing for cat-owners to know about. Thank you for shedding light on this disease.

Hi Brett,

very good and informative piece here. Many cat owners are not aware of this at all I have discovered. my wife's cat growing up had FIV and lived to be 18, so with good care and a close eye it can be well managed.

excellent piece

That was really interesting, Brett. We have a feral female cat, we've had her from 3 weeks old, and she is 8 now. We brought her home from Spain when we moved back to England. Needless to say, she has had all her injections, etc, since birth. I hadn't heard of Cat AIDS, so that was a new one for me. It's something people should be aware of though, as there are many feral cats around that people will willingly take in. I did enjoy reading this article, well done! :) Sandra xx

Excellently written. Your post is informative and interesting. I had a cat for several years (I've written a story as to why I don't any longer) and getting him vaccinated against FIV was very important. Pet owners need to do the proper research before making the commitment to an animal, and your post is definitely a must read for anyone who wants to get a cat.

To answer your food for thought question: absolutely not! I work closely with rescues in my area and it infuriates me to see so many owner surrenders. A pet is a commitment, not a fair weather friend. We take full responsibility of a creature's life - that animal depends on us to keep it safe. Would we leave behind our invalid grandmother just because she had a terminal disease? I should hope not, so why is a family pet any difference.

I apologize for rambling on your review. I have an unmistakable passion for animals. I hope your post is able to inform many current and potential cat owners.

Wow Brett you are a continuing wealth of information! Feline aids? I have never heard of this. Something that your favourite pussie would dread catching.
Very informative and in depth as usual Thanks for posting

Leave a pet behind? That's the equivalent of leaving a sick baby to fend for itself. Better to have the vet put it down. I imagine this virus is found a lot in the feral cats found in a well-meaning overcrowded obsessive cat lover's home. An interesting and thought provoking essay.
