Kim,
This is an excellent villanelle. It follows the style well. Your rhymes are super. Your message is bittersweet. How many Veterans fought for our freedom only to be looked upon with disgust when they returned or are seen in public in other circumstances? It is awful the way so many are treated so badly.
You are so right in your message & so kind to speak for those amazing men [and women] who fought for us.
Awesome! Jan

Hi Jan!
I just wish we could turn back time to an age where we once respected those who have lost so much (including their lives) to ensure our freedoms. Thank you for the fantastic comments.

Hi Kim. I'm glad to read your poem and see that you are back after
a long absence. Your Villanelle is so true. Those who gave so much
for freedom aren't appreciated by many. They are heroes for freedom.
Your poem is well written and rhymed with good flow.

Who could knock the sacrifices that our soldiers go through so that we can sit at home and talk politics; and be rude to the principles of our nation. A simple thing like honoring the flag of the country that asks our youth to risk their lives. The irony is obvious when they kneel at the pledge of allegiance and then say they respect our veterans. It was an excellent poem and I hope that a more veterans read it. America is on their side even if some don't understand.

You are of course right when you say that a villanelle has no set meter, but for me, when one is written like this, in lines of ten syllables, it screams allowed for meter. Last week I tried writing free verse villanelles and found that they only seemed to work if I kept well away from any syllabic construction that even remotely resemble meter. Five and seven syllables are therefore good.
I am one hundred percent with you on content here, and this at ten syllables a line has to be acceptable, but I so want it to be metrical.

Hi Pantygynt,
It felt so good to unplug from the world and just write something. For you I will try to revisit the meter if you give me the line that screamed at you the most lol But first, I need to sleep. Thank you for your always candid reviews.

No, there was no one line. Is is designed as a syllabic poem. I just prefer meter, that is all, especially when the lines have a metrical length. The two styles are perfectly valid I just prefer one over the other. That is all.

I cannot put into words how much I loved this. Your topic is and has been a hot-button issue for some time, but most people only talk empty words without following through. I think many people forget that many of our front line soldiers are 19 year old Lance Corporals who were in high school not even a year prior. Such bravery and sacrifice. Thank you for writing this.

Your poem is meaningful and stimulates my thinking
of the sacrifices those soldiers make for us and how neglected they are once they come back home. I like the way you make it rhyme and still has meaning. Thanks for sharing your talent.

A very well-written Villanelle on freedom and the role of the soldiers who are used and misused in the name of freedom, they never see the freedom they are fighting for.
