It's good Cody has Beth in his life. she knows how Cody takes everything as if it's his fault. Another think I have in common with Cody when I was a kid. "it wasn't anything you did wrong." I bet many readers will identify: "At the time, Cody thought he was doing the right thing." "Now I have another one of your little messes to stop what I need to be doing and clean up!" The sheriff needs a parenting class. I could
give him one...grrr.

The POV from Cody gives the reader the opportunity to see the heartache this minor incident has on him. Cody is a sensitive child and just wants to please his foster dad, Sheriff Daniels. His flight decision to run away is expected because his mindset always expects the worst to happen to him.
The dialogue between Sheriff Daniels and Cody is on fire, believable and you want to step in the middle of them and stop it. Fantastic chapter.

Nice story so far, about a boy who misunderstood the situation. And the sheriff snapped at him unfairly. It was really his fault. But Cody didn't wait for perhaps an apology. Obviously, Cody feels like a burden. I'm not sure how he ended up in foster care, but this might have made him sensitive to adults yelling and treating him badly.
I look forward to reading more.

My two Cody Schroder books Astatula, and Missing, explain the whole Cody Schroder story...up to this point. You may chose to read them. Glad you enjoyed this portion of this story. Part Two is posted, and Part Three will soon follow. Be on the lookout for it.

The way Cody's father is called the Sheriff compliments their relationship nicely - he's authoritive and emotionally distant. I thought this flowed really nicely too. Great work!

The Sheriff is actually Cody's Foster Dad. The real idiot is Earl Anthony Schroder, Cody's biological father. Unless you are familiar with my Cody Schroder stories you probably do not grasp the relationships of the characters. My books Astatula and Missing explain all this. And apparently you are not familiar with them.

It's refreshing to read this from the child's perspective. As adults, we often snap at our children because we are under pressure, and don't realize the negative impact. You have used realistic dialogue which has let us know what your story line is. Now we just wait to see what predicament Cody ends up in.

Poor Cody! His well-meaning efforts often get him into trouble. Maybe it's because of the circumstances that have placed him in foster care with Sheriff Daniels, but he always expects the worst is going to happen to him. It's just typical for a parent to become angry over what their children do, and Daniels has another big case on his mind. Cody is prone to act without thinking. If he runs away, he'll still be someone's responsibility. Sounds like he is jumping into the fire in this case if he runs away. Trouble seems to follow him. Great beginning. judi

You know Brett, there are times when parents will handle situations wrongly when they are in a busy time. This is what happened between Cody and Brock about Cody findingna leaking plumbing and Brock was deep in a legal issue. Did Brock handle the incidence wrong, I think so and Cody , I feel over reacted! Now, he runs away!
Another excellent storyline, Brett! Looking forward to more stories.
Have a great day my friend,,,,,,,,,,, Jim

Believable actions and dialogue of Cody. A typical young boy. Well drawn character. You've created suspense and you leave me wanting more.
Great cliff-hanger.
