A very well-written poem and confession of your wrong ways and how you found the light. I am pleased you are walking in the light and becomes the person God wanted you to be.

Your usual non-preachy but personal experience write on your Faith, Ray, where you admit your past faults, how you wrongly blamed others, but once 'seeing the light', you were transformed for the better.
Very eloquent, top metaphors, excellent rhymes and meter.
Cheers, Ray.

Good luck with your contest entry; so much damage drink has done - broken families, dangerous drugs do follow. I thought you picked a good subject for the contest. Look at our young people today, drinking has become fashionable.

A theme I've heard you embrace before, and I never tire of. I remember you told me once of the life you lived before you found Christ. You mentioned a dazzling light. Were you speaking metaphorically? Some, I've heard of who experienced a physical phenomenon accompanying their conversion. With others it was as simple, and as simply profound as being transformed by an unshakable knowing. A knowing that they know that they know.
The end result is the same, and you found it. Blessings to you, Roy.

Thanks Jay, the light is metaphorical, it was more an ecstatatic joy and a feeling of being in Heaven, I would give up everything fo it to happen again, and thanks, for the great review, blessings, Roy.

Hi Roy,
I'm sitting outside under the stars and I read this absolutely stunning poem that I wish I had a six to give it.
Because I think it's so amazing and because even I can completely relate to this, though, for me, my spiritual strength grew stronger on my journey, but my organized religion and believe in that, went out the window.
Once I overcame it all, I felt, for myself, that the universe and all it entails had to be so much broader than I could even imagine, hold so much more than I gave it credit for, and have so much more meaning for so many more people than would ever touch my life, but t had to work for all of us...
Sitting here, reading this, I felt as one with you, the survivor of this poem.
THIS is what poetry is, Roy.
I hope, with all my heart, that this gets a lot of recognition. If it weren't in this contest, it would be what I would say could be a POM choice in that booth with others... Of course, I'm not in charge of anything, lol so what do I know?
Still, I loved it.
One note:
In the first line of the 3rd stanza, why not just use "myself" instead of "onesself"?
You're already talking about yourself...
Just a thought,
Love and laughter to you and a virtual six from me,
Cat

Thanks Cat, it genuinely was a "Damascus Road" encounter nobody converted me, I was an agnostic, but like you, thought God "abstract" only my encounter, changed that. I would certainly be dead now, my escape from alcohol, drugs, and compulsive gambling was almost immediate.thank you for your gracious and delightful words and friendship, blessings, Roy

Hi, Roy
= This is such a wonderful testimony of faith, my friend.
= It's interesting, how many times one has to walk in the darkness before the light shines through, be it for forgiveness ... overcoming adversity ... or just being lost in the world.
= But, the main thing is that we do. Really like this.

Roy,
This is an awesome poem regardless of contest. It is a strong entry, too.
You did a great job with the rhymes. Your lines have a smooth flow. Your message, so personal, is awesome, too. What is pertinent here is that you lived that which you wrote about. I commend you for sharing a bit of your life's struggle. I am happy for you that you saw the Light and have been saved.
Good job & best wishes in the contest. Jan
