I really enjoyed reading this essay. It took me on a trip of time past. I am 62 years old and I remember these things as if they were yesterday. Such wonderful memories and it was a good life.

Having been born in June of 1960, I remember Lamb Chop, and Sonia Phyllis Hurwitz ( better known as Shari Lewis ) quite well. She was best known as the original puppeteer of sock puppet Lamb Chop, first appearing on Hi Mom, a local morning Television show that aired on WRCA-TV (now WNBC-TV) in New York City. I watched her show all the time as a young kid.
Unfortunately, I remember "idiot mittens" too, those two mittens attached to a long string, then placed each through opposite sleeves on your coat so that when you removed the mittens you weren't apt to lose them. Didn't keep me from losing mine (sometimes on purpose), which is why I always got a freshly knitted, brand spankin' new pair from my mom's mother, Grandma Goff, each and every Christmas until I was around sixteen-years-old.
Twenty-five cents for an allowance.
A Saturday matinee:
three cartoons, two features, a pop and a popcorn,
sitting right up front, or maybe in the balcony so
you could spy on your big sister and her boyfriend. ... I used to go all around our neighborhood collecting pop bottles to turn in for the deposit. On a good day, I'd manage to round up around two bucks or three bucks, which was good enough for a Coca-Cola Slurpee from 7-11, two horror comics at a quarter a piece (or one Creepy or Eerie magazine which had to be sneaked from the adult-oriented rack of magazines, for a buck.), and a Reese's Cup candy bar for a nickle, with money to spare.
A nickle! Wanna know what a Reese's Cup candy bar costs today?

I remember it all. Such a joy to go down memory lane with you. I remember Buddy Holly's 'That'll be the Day and slow dancing to the Marvel's 'Blue Moon'.
Oh, and 'Twist and Shout'. My waist was only 23inches from all the twist dancing.
We did interact with out burying our faces in cell phones.
I loved this piece, Dawn, and didn't see anything to correct.

WOW!! LOVE IT!!!
Forget the Chatty Cathy dolly ... I would have wanted a pocket knife or a good book, or a puppy. My sister had the dolls. LOL
All the rest, well Australia wasn't so different to Canada in those days. I'd love to go back ... for a time anyway. We didn't trick or treat, though the pennies and sixpence at the corner store bought the lolly bags. I was in the classroom when Neil Armstrong did his thing! What a day to be alive!!
Bring it all ON gal! So much I'd forgotten ... thanks for the wonderful memories ... just think, my sons would never believe it. Hahahaha! How lucky we were to have so many experiences. I love coffee shop dwelling and chats with friends, I hate all the modern conveniences used non-stop even when they gather. Not that I don't love my computer and mobile phone. I just don't need to be permanently attached.
Where are you getting all this surge of energy from? Did I send you a box of my purple brownies? Love it. I think I stopped breathing as I read your epic. :))) A six from Ray .... now that's SOMETHING. LOL Hugs - Lovi xoxox

Yes, I am that old, but still young enough to remember and cherish life as it was then. You have captured the essence of the "good old days" and your closing statement should be enshrined in the Constitution.

Ideasaregems-Dawn, this was a great trip down memory lane! I remember it all so vividly. I am sure this touched a lot of readers here and brought them, too, back to a time so long ago now. Miss all those great things. You're right! Put down the computers and play a board game...monopoly or scrabble. Make some popcorn and sit up all night with your brothers and sisters on the weekend watching old-time horror movies till your eyes hurt from squinting so hard throughout the whole movie!!! Bing a boy, much of this is alien to me, Dawn - well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;-)
I do remember what we called, 'Saturday Morning Pictures' at the cinema.
I did have a Piggy Bank, but once I worked out how to get the pennies out with a kitchen knife, my saving attempts ended - and never started again. LOL.
Loads of great girly and general kids memories here, and despite it being longer than my usual attention spell, it kept me very entertained, so here's a sixer, my friend.
