The musician in you really comes out with this review mikey. I also remember in the 50s and almost through to the 70's some of the theatres in Adelaide had the piano player (as above in your pic) and they would play while waiting for the movies to start and at interval. It was a real let down when they were no longer there. Great article on music through film, I enjoyed and this wasn't an easy topic (for me at any rate)cheers,
valda.

Hi Mikey

A very informative and interesting read. You are so right, music is an important part of the film experience ... so true, the music can lift a good film into a great film category. I'm so pleased you used "Chariot of Fire" - one of my gave music charged movies. "A League of Their Own" --- yah, yah ... dis von tuuoo. I can't remember the music in Avatar, this is maybe why!

Guddy up! Guddy Up Move along, move along (or is it move 'em on, move 'em on?) ... Raawwhide! - oh dose westuns.

Great free flow non-fiction for the challenge. Well done .. as per usual. Hugs - Lovi xoxox

I liked this one ... I even wrote half a review on a chocolate dessert, of course!! LOL I might get back to finish it, one day. The others were a bit too difficult for me, though I'm having enough trouble posting for the Potlatch and the odd other post, then still behind in replies and reviews. Nice to hear from you ... chugga chugga ... why does it take so long? I missed lunch, so not about to miss dinner. I may return. LOL Hugs - Lovi xoxo

What a neat topic to write an essay about. Soundtracks are key to my visual enjoyment of a movie. Some of the best tunes I have picked up from the soundtracks such as "The Current" from the Terminator 2.

I can imagine the organist playing was also a hoot particularly for the musician. The soundtracks are what destroy some movies for me, particularly if they're waaaaaaay overdone. They are much more subtle these days, and in fact so much so, some people don't consciously register them, but they're there.

Excellent Potlatch offering, Mav. I should say you were also the first in, so you get the blue ribbon of approval.

Super job!

I would've loved to play the organ to the silents back in the day, Ange. I think that would've been mad fun. Sometimes the simple sounds of a few notes stick with me. Like Full Metal Jacket, that has a lot of sound bytes that pop into my head and then it takes me forever to place them. Eyes Wide Shut had some compelling music I thought. Oh well, a cool topic for musicians. :)) Thanks a million. The blue ribbon of approval reminds me of Pabst beer. Mav

Great writing on music and the mood setting of music in movies. Scary movies always play music to build up suspense and make you hop when something scary happens.

I think it is amazing how the music goes on through the whole thing, brings action or horror where needed and yet we can space it out and not realize there is music playing. Yet it does affect us. Very well done

Second review: five stars
First review: four stars.

Hi, Mikey,

I enjoyed reading your nostalgic prose about the movies. It's amazing how music 'drives' the emotions and energy of a film. Often times, we know the music is there, but we're more often being driven by it rather than just listening to the music. Amazing. And you're correct about 'Chariots of Fire'. I love that film. Two others I also like a great deal include 'W.E.' and 'Oblivion.'

While I enjoyed reading your story about the importance of good music in the movies, the write had numerous SPAG concerns. I attribute this to the speed writing of the challenge. In some places, wording was just a bit awkward and in some places punctuation was missing. I humbly offer the following thoughts and suggestions for your consideration.

Please let me know if you make edits as I'd like to return and review again.

-Ray

May I offer some suggestions for you to consider?

In the silent movie days[,] an organist sat[would sit] in a pit at the front of the theatre [improvising music to accompany the scenes unfolding before the audience.] and accompanied the movie improvising music to fit the scenes unfolding before the audience. That is what originally constituted music for cinema.

[Nowadays, almost all movies have music.]

Italicize the names of the songs, i.e., Live and Let Die, etc.

Who doesn't get a kick out of the old thirties and forties westerns and their hokey title songs. [?]

....howl at some of them[,] and it certainly sets...

These call[-]to[-]mind previous

appropriate action music[,] if you will (I'm not sure 'if you will' is even needed.

Romance is accompanied when done well by moving and touching music getting us in the proper mood.
[Romance is accompanied by moving and touching music, thus getting us in the proper mood.]

It is spot[-]on scene[-]by[-]scene.

In paragraph 6, you have have four lines running together that each start with the word 'it.'

When it's done right [well], the sound of a theme song immerses you completely in the movie it came from immediately.
{the wording at the end of the line is somewhat awkward. Here's a suggested fix: }
[...theme song immediately and completely immerses you into the essence of the film.]

Thanks a million, Ray. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this. I've made all of these changes and it's a world of difference. I usually don't make so many errors in these quick rights. The theme was a little broad this time, so the focus wasn't as keen. As good an excuse as any. HAHAHA! Well, night and day difference. Thanks again. mikey

Hi Mikey,
a great read hun, and a little chuckle at the poor piano player in the silent movies.
Really interesting. Horror movies without music just wouldn't work.
I really enjoyed this read. Very interesting.

I haven't been to an actual movie theater in years!!! Actually, the last time was when I took my son to The Pirates of the Caribbean, probably two sequels ago. He really liked them, me, not so much. My husband and I rent movies and watch them at home with our own popcorn and comfort. I do agree with your assessment of the music though. The music does at to the story.
