This is an interestingly accurate article that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I went on a course of writing screenplays some time ago and learned that the story in most films is actually still told via the pictures rather than the dialogue because it harks back to the days of those silent movies with their improvised organ music. Over here in the smaller cinemas or flea pits as the came to be known, a piano was all that could be mustered. The musicians were amazingly skilled.

The only thing in your article that I would disagree with was the bit about Avatar. It didn't seem to me to need bad music to ruin it was just a bad movie, or so I thought. I nearly dislocated my jaw through yawning so much.

Excellent review, Mikey. Such a novel and fascinating idea for a review. I have always appreciated the role of music in movies, and I really enjoyed your overview of it. I hate to admit this, being a huge baseball fan and all, but I have never seen "A League of Their Own" in it's entirety, but now I will have to. Just the other night I saw the famous "...there's no crying in baseball..." scene for the upteenth time, but now I have to make it a point to watch the movie from start to finish.

You presented great examples to exemplify your points, from the Bond movies to "Chariots of Fire" (loved the soundtrack to it). Great job! Bill

I keep waiting for a movie to come along that I can stand to see. We just have the big box theaters here in Thousand Oaks. I want to go the place that serves drinks too :)
Anyway - interesting essay, and I do agree. I recently saw a BBC Mystery series called BroadChurch. The music was AMAZING - just stopped me in my tracks. It made a fantastic show just that much better. Of course, with David Tennant, what could go wrong? Love that guy!!!

Nice job, Mikey.

Thanks for sharing your essay that I would say most of us will agree. The music sets the mood for the scenes and can even tell us when to jump and scream. Great job. :-)

My son and I were remarking on that very subject last evening when a movie we were watching turned us away because of the music. The Movie that moved me the most was "The Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Dey Lewis and Madeline Stowe. My heart kept beat with that theme music which moved the story forward at a steady Pace. James Fenimore Cooper would have been proud. Good subject Mikey.xx Nancy

Wow, Mikey, this is a great entry to this week's potlatch. How right you are that the accompanying music to a movie is all important. It sure does enhance the movie. All the best. Ulla:)))

City of Angels is another example of a movie with well bone music especially since Sarah McLachlan's Angel is my all time favorite song. Well written my friend. I haven't watched a movie in years--mostly because I get distracted and start writing. Maybe you'll review one that will interest me enough to actually watch it, my friend. Good writing, mikey~Debbie

Hello, Mike :)

Awesome entry for the Prose Potlatch. You guys are coming up with some awesome pieces. I am very proud of you and Gloria for organizing this event. I am not sure who else helps out with it.

I know what you mean about music in cinema. It's funny how far we come from the music coming from a pit by the stage to the outstanding soundtracks of time.

The Exorcist comes to mind. Jaws. 2001 A Space Odyssey. and of course, Star Wars. I was in diapers when 2001 a Space odyssey came out. LoL

Love it, sweetie pie, Good job!

Sister Gypsy mwah!

Because of music in movies, I find myself thinking at particular moments, "Ok now the time for soft violin or tension in this room deserves some bombastic music. I think my biggest pet peeve is when the music is so loud it detracts from or drowns out the music.

Remember cartoon and how they used classical music as background? Messed me up. When I later studied music I could get Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd out of my mind when I head the melody.
