Hello Aussie,

this is clearly a heartfelt story, a poignant and apposite diatribe on the injustices inflicted on the Australian Aborigine, from colonialists to present-day perpetuators, narrated very strongly and convincingly from the aboriginal perspective. I was very impressed and moved and found it very well conceived.

Back in the early nineteen eighties, 1984 to be precise, I had occasion to live and work in Darwin, Australia for approximately one year and I can remember being shocked and angered by the treatment meted out by the federal police to the local aborigines on a regular basis. And I was saddened by the defeated look on the faces of this once proud people, reduced to a life of poverty, drunkenness and disease, treated like animals in their own homeland.

Unfortunately this poem is completely true to the picture I formed from those first-hand experiences, and so it depresses me all over again to see that nothing much has changed in the proceeding years. The English certainly have a lot of unaccounted historic deeds to answer for, but who amongst the present-day descendants of those plunderers, murderers and rapists would feel one ounce of responsibility or shame? -Blu

Hello Blu, Thanks for reading and understanding out plight to this present day. Slowly, the worth of the Aboriginal is being recognised. Did you know that our most famous artist (Albert Namatjirra)was actually MADE an Australian by the Queen on her visit to Australia in 1953. What a joke! Cheers, Kay.

No I didn't know that, but it figures. A sick joke indeed - I bet she laughed hard after that one.

This is a well written poem that I enjoyed reading. It relates the suppression of native people, forced to separate from their traditions by invaders of their land. It's sad to lose the value of indigenous people of any country. Descriptive with excellent rhyming and content. Marilyn

Hello Marilyn, Thanks so much for reading and enjoying. My people are slowly coming back through their own ambitions and learning. We are teaching the whites and there are bonds being made. Bless you, Kay.

I missed this one. I think the white-man took from too many countries, destroying cultures everywhere. It was criminal what they did and as you say, the apologies are far too late. It never should have happened. Well done, and good luck in the poem of the month!!! :) Sandra xxx

My thoughts and prayers for Ian. Yes, the British did a lot of damage way back then. It happened in Virginia America too. They wiped out the Powchant Indians, killed them, took their lands for growing tobacco! Thank you Wombat!

You have come up again with a useful and excellent account of the problems faced by Australian aboriginals with the English whites who invaded their lands and virtually enslaved its people. Once again you do us proud in relating this story. Take care Kay. Regard and love, Alan

Your poetic form gives a voice to your people. You capture well in your use of words how the whites made your people change to a different culture. Your poem creates a clear scene of the result of the attempt to assimilate your people.

What a powerful title that parallels a story of what took place in the United States as well! I admired your rhymed couplets in these quatrains that describe the tragedy. Here's to "Dreamtime" not being completely lost. Warm regards- Joan

Hello Joan, Thanks for dropping in. We can't undo the past, the future is in our hands. Our indigenous are still treated as second-class people. Shame on the British. Bless you, Kay.

This is a five star poem. Well constructed, well expressed,
conveyed passion, hopelessness and hate. I hope the hatred can dissipate
with time. I liked the rhythms but as very saddened by the content.

This plumbs the depths of the tragedy more powerfully than anything I have read before. It goes beyond the stolen generation into the even greater theft of a stolen culture. A poem that should be widely read here in Australia.

Thank you for dropping in and reading. We can't change the past, we can build a better future. Shame on the British for what they did to our Aboriginal people. 'Sorry' doesn't cut it. Blessings, Kay. XX

Oh Kay this was really well written, History told so perfectly.

I chuckle when I hear people speaking of it being their country. (in any colonized country like the US, Canada, Australia, NZ. etc.) They seem to forget that there were peoples before the white man arrived. And in most places those indigenous people were treated so very badly.

You tell this perfectly here my friend.

Thanks for sharing.
